I bought a sporter 1917 lee enfield a while ago and was looking at buying a new rifle for deer season. My wife said why not sell some of your old guns. This made me think hey why don't I turn my 1917 Lee Enfield #1 MK 3 into a Deer Rifle. I know right away alot of people are going to blast me for ruining a perfectly good peice of history but the rifle was already a sporter. Let me know what you think good or bad i would like to hear it all.
I sand blasted all the metal parts and cleaned them, after that I painted them with a high solid polyurethane paint we use on helicopter rotor blades at work. If stones don't chip the blades spinning at mach a billion I think it will hold up hunting. Then installed the ATI Monte Carlo stock, followed by the weaver rails. Then the scope and the sling. All said and done this rifle cost me 425$ not bad at all for a great shooting rifle.

the silver scope is sinfully ugly, but if it's like the enfield i carried for a season, it will go bang every time, and that's the important part.

i need to get some of your chipless paint, my blades loose color every time i fly through rain ;)

Maybe you're hitting too many stones at mach a billion!
On a fixed wing the propellor starts to lose efficiency if the tips go faster than speed of sound.
How is it with the helicopter?

Looking nice, hopefully you bag a big one with that. This year I plan on using an Enfield instead of a 308 bolt, but only after I fill a tag with my Mosin haha. If I manage to fill 2 tags, I'm going to take the m305 or 858 for the 3rd.

Nice rifle, but I can't help to be reminded that for the cost of fixing up the 303 one could buy a new/modern Marlin X7 for about the same price or a wee bit more.

How does the 303 shoot?

Just sayin'.

Nice work!

Now...

Just trim that barrel back to about 20", which will get rid of that front sight, and remove the rear sight, and you'll have a sweet, trim and light weight deer rifle that'll carry like a Marlin or Win. lever action. You won't miss that extra iron one little bit!

And you can trim that clip back flush with the stock, still pack 4 or 5 rounds in it, and make it that much sweeter yet.

Got my first deer with this one...which my Dad worked over about 40 years back...barrel is about 19", and it might weigh about 6 lbs!

I've got 2 sportered shortened enfields in the gun cabinet too. They don't see much use but every now and then I take them for day trips. Theres something so satisfying about slapping an enfield mag in and giving it the one hand carry up a hardwood ridge :)

Yeah I could have done that, but then I need to look at taxes and a Scope, rings, and mount and I'm adding another 300 bucks.

On a different note what are you guys using for ammo, for deer in .303, are you using super expensive stuff or are you using the 25 bucks a box SP bullets.

I like the way you think. Last year I took a mulie doe with my Garand and carried my M38 Swede Mauser for another couple of days. This year it will be the Garand, the M38, a K31 and a Parker Hale Supreme No.4 sporter conversion. Hunting with new rifles is just so ordinary. ;):D

Meh. If we always did what was most practical we would all be hunting with Stevens 200's in 30-06. The Enfield has way more character and will do the job if OP does his.

Somebody makes premium ammo in .303? :D

I have only tried Winchester white box 180gr in my new sporter so far, but I picked up a box of Federal blue box 180gr the other day for the next range trip. I have not seen anything but the 180gr stuff, but I haven't looked for ammo in WSS or other gun store yet. I am stupid busy with work and am hoping to avoid having to develop loads for the .303 before this fall. Next year I will have time to sort that out and be shooting handloads instead of commercial ammo. I don't have any concern over a 180gr bullet at 2400fps being sufficient, though. The deer around here aren't bulletproof yet.
