Received and installed my Turner Saddlery M1907 Sling, but in a new synthetic BIOTHANE. Of course I bought this sling in OD Green... I'm old school. They offered the tactical black and a new desert tan hue. What a wonderful piece of kit. I've used all sorts of 1907 slings in NRA High Power matches over the years and this unit is quite the looker (and feeler).
It cost me $ 49.95 plus the $ 10ish for mailing from their website. Just 'google' Turner Saddlery and your first hit will be their site. I tried to order online, but their 'State' field did not allow Kanuckistani provinces, so I just called them.
The kind lady was happy to sell to us CGNutters north of the border and a week later, the sling arrived.
Feel
They were not joking about this biothane sling feeling like a soft leather sling that has been broken in. It's nice to the touch, especially with soft 'teacher' hands like mine.
Hey, I'm becoming a twinkie in my old age. The Turner people boast that this sling can lift 2500 lbs or something like that. Hey, maybe it can double as an emergency rescue tow strap for my Jeep Cherokee during the rainy season??
The sling hooks are tough, the steel is parkerized (of course), but the biothane holes that the sling hooks bite into are stiff enough to resist premature wear or stretching or any deterioration that is common in leather fibers. Hey whatcha expect from leather ? This biothane material likes having the pairs of holes there. I cannot foresee any stretching over the years of 'slinging in' and competing. I also figured out a way to bend the biothane sling just before the holes so that I can expedite the hooking up of the sling hooks into the appropriate holes.
Look
Nothing replaces the look of an M1907 sling on your collector M1903 Springer, or M1 Garand or M14, even if your M14 was made by the Kommunist Oppressors of the Tibetan nation
. Hey, you can even use this sling on your AR, but it's too long for the shorter AR platform all dressed up for DCM or NRA High Power, so Turner Saddlery makes them in a shorter format for the black rifle gunners. My sling is the usual 52" length, they call it. The OD green is your typical OD green like my old school combats from Wainwright and Calgary after a few washings. This 52" length was made for this M1 Garand. Hey! I don't even own an M14 platform rifle. Can't afford one, especially at my tastes. So Jean C Garand's invention is my pride and joy. Who cares about USGI parts ? ALL of the M1 Garand's parts are USGI!! ha ha ha ha and reasonably priced, too !!
Slinging In
Here's the proof of this sling's worth: climbing into the sling and assuming the position (sitting, prone, or hasty). I was wearing a long sleeved shirt because any M1907 sling can snug you up while wearing a shooting jacket, but let's see if the sling stays put on your bicep while wearing a BDU or combat shirt or blouse or tunic. Holy Shzt!
This biothane material likes to stick to your shirt material. Then on top of that, the biothane keepers (secured together by 3 fat staples) have a natural surface (tension?) sticking ability to resist movement as all the M1907 slings tend to loosen up your 'sling cuff' as you shoot and get pushed from the recoil. We used to call this 'position breakdown' in the NRA High Power circles. These biothane made keepers are exactly what the doctor ordered over the previous wax and tanned leather keepers. Often when a competitor bought a new leather M1907 sling, one would also purchase extra keepers in anticipation of the stretching habits of traditional leather keepers. So these new biothane keepers are just the ticket. Yahooo !
Next weekend, I'll come back with a report on how the sling made out at an OSA Service Rifle match in Connaught Ranges, Ottawa area.
Summary
M1907 slings are not for everyone. Some of you will still prefer that newer postwar canvas sling that was made for the M1 Garand and then the USGI Contractors switched to nylon OD green for the M14 and M16 during the Vietnam war era. I like those slings too, but for my carry Lee Enfield jungle carbines!! Nice and lighter.
If you want a M1907 sling for looks, any of the leather ones found on ebay or the MRT marked leather 1907 slings will get the job done for around $ 50ish. For casual competition, that's perfectly fine. I just wanted to own one of the best: Turner Saddlery or Leslie Tam (in Hawaii) are both reputed to be the best of the current M1907 makers.
This new biothane material is uber cool and uber tough, too. You'll be able to pass it on to your kids and grandkids. Like some tactical items: You'll die before the kit dies.
Hope this helps you stoke the M1907 sling addiction
