Just curious - what sort of mods owners and users recommend for someone who wants to turn a 10/22 into a seriously accurate target rifle. Any ideas?

Thanks :)

The absolute bare minimum is a Volq hammer! Replace the factory hammer and remove the front barrel band and you are off to the races. After that, the sky is the limit. To my 1022 I have added:

Volq hammer kit
Volq trigger kit (inc buffer)
20" stainless, flutted and crowned Clerke barrel
Power-Custom extended weaver base
6X18X40 Bushnell Legend scope
Burris Sig Zee rings
Boyds thumb-hole stock

Not related to accuracy, I have also added:
Volq extended mag release
Volq bolt release

Really, its up to you and your bank account.... ;) Here she is:

Nearly everyone who is looking to accurize a 10/22 will get a heavy .920 barrel, and a new stock to accomodate the barrel. If you are handy with tools you can modify your original wooden stock for a .920 barrel. You are also going to want to invest in a decent scope and rings. Check out the "Ultimate 10/22" section on Rimfirecentral forums for ideas and discussion.

Here is my 10/22:

My 1022T

Here's a pic of mine. She's a sleeper.
1022T.jpg

Stock Ruger 1022T with the following mods done to it:

Bolt radiused
Firing pin pinned
bolt shock buffer installed
VQ target hammer
VQ target trigger
VQ exact edge extractor
VQ extended mag catch
hexhead take down screw
Harris BR bipod with oversize thumbscrew
Tasco 2.5-10x42mm mildt AO scope in Weaver High Extra Rings and with Butler Creek flip up scope covers

It easily puts 10 rounds under a dime at 50M without even trying hard......

As you can see, the sky is the limit, but so is the depth of your pocket book. I swear by the VQ parts though...have fun building up yours!:)

Here is a pic of mione:

P6151755.sized.jpg

Hogue overmoulded Stock
Green Montain SS Fluted Heavy Barrel.
Leupold Base and Rings
Simmons Whitetail Classic 3.5-10x40mm Scope
Harris Bi-pod
Bolt is Sanded and polished
Inside reciever is sanded and polished
Exterior of reciever plated with 24 carat gold
Extended mag release
Bolt buffer
Automatic bolt release

I am still going to add
a Kidd trigger group
a Bushnell Elite 4200 scope
Titanium firing pin

This gun is a tack driver and alot of fun :)

Getting pretty dam expensive though!!!!!!!

I took part of a OT check and some of santa's money and put a stainless T on lay away, gopher beware!!! 10/22t ,17hmr and 204 ruger I think I am set.

As a “serious accurate target rifle” aficionado I sincerely wish that you would not refer to the 10/22 as such.
If you have lots of money to burn and you wish to spiff-up a stock 10/22 to make it look better (and if your lucky, gain a little accuracy at 50-yards) then go for it.

I dunno mate, with the right ammo I can make a dime sized hole(10 shots) at 50 yards no problem with mine.......if that isnt accurate then I guess I better toss mine into the trash :D:D

Or are you just and anti-10/22 person??

Out of the box they are crap and I admit it, but put a little work into it and you can make a really nice target rifle.

I am not knocking 10-22's, I have a nice 10-22 but it will never compete in accuracy with a good bolt action, no semi-auto ever will. A 10-22 could only be considered seriously accurate if it was compared to other semi-auto rifles.

In the world of accuracy bolt actions dominate.

With that being said, replacing the barrel with a quality Lilja heavy barrel, having the trigger worked, the stock replaced and a quality scope installed could cost much more than $1500 quite easily.

I am not at all convinced that a tricked out (or ultimate) 10/22 is capable of *consistence* accuracy like that, no matter what ammo it used.
BTW I take offence to your “are you a 10/22 racist remark”;)

The way Ruger designed the 10/22 (and the 77/22), and in particular the way the barrel is fastened to the receiver it subordinates these nice looking guns to nice looking plinkers.
Merry Chistmas to you and all my friends here at CGN.

I can agree with that statement......

When I bought my new barrel I should have gotten the style with the scope mount built into the barrel.

My 22 though, is EXTREMELY tight fitting between the reciever and the barrel, this is due to added material from the electroplating. I actually had to sand the port down so the barrel would fit, and it is TIGHT!!!

I cant wait to get my gun finished and really put it to the test :)

I am interested in this type, I don't think I would get a heavy bbl though, would it hurt if you left the band there, perhaps new hammer, new wide trigger/overtravel, trigger bushings, oversize trigger pins, buffer, extended release, new steel bbl wedge, hex bedding screw, one hand bolt release, btw, does this type hold open on the last shot? This could pose a small problem if it does not. I would be interested in the steel lips mags, are they okay usually?

Mine was, but I have heard that the 1022T barrels are hit & miss....some are great, some are more akin to shotguns...guess I got lucky......sure do like the look of the helical finish on them though.....
