Hello,

I'm not familiar with classifications of firearms. I'm interested in getting a Benelli M4 Shotgun but I need a unrestricted firearm. If a Benelli M4 is a restricted (short barreled model) with telescoping scope. Can I add a fixed stock and have it verified as a unrestricted model?

Thanks in advance

No. The restricted version only has a 14" barrel. Restricted regardless of overall length.

There are non-res M4s available.

No

You can add a longer barrel to make it unrestricted. My M4 isn't restricted and have a collapsible stock. You need a barrel longer than 18.5"

Runt needs to purchase the non-restricted version. I've never heard/read/seen anyone take a restricted firearm and make it non-restricted. If you know of a case where this has happened I'd love to read up on it. It's my understanding that once registered as restricted, that's it. What you want is this one. If you can find shorter barrels for it that maintain over-all length of 26" or more, you can install it. You cannot however cut this barrel down.

It's legal to own a 8.5" barreled 870 clone with a full length stock.
It is NOT legal to alter your barrel shorter than 18.5

I am not a lawyer. The RCMP doesn't make the law, so don't take their website at face value either. I hate to give them any bandwidth, but this news article explains it fairly well (albeit biased)

From what I understand a restricted can be made non restricted by changing the barrel and contacting the RCMP to have the status changed.

Your understanding is wrong. Rifles or shotguns that are restricted due to overall and/or barrel length can be made non-restricted by addressing either issue.

It's done all the time by dealers and private owners. Check Arms East's thread here for a recent example.

simple fact is the M4 is a semi auto centerfire firearm. It has to have a 18.5" barrel to remain or become unrestricted…

Original poster (Runt)... lengthening the stock is irrelevant for your inquiry.

Buy an 18.5" (or longer) barrel, and put it on the gun.

Call the RCMP to let them know about it.

They might take your word for it, or they might ask you to take it to someone they trust to verify it.

Easy as that.

Thank you every one. I thought overall length was the issue hence adding a non-collapsible stock and sticking with a 14" barrel. I get though.....I'll just get a 18.5" barreled model.
