Is it possible to turn a previously "stainless" gun into a blued gun?

Remington 870 Marine Magnum
Mossberg 500 Marine
Beretta 92 INOX
Savage 12FVSS
Remington 700 XCR Stainless

Will the blue not hold on the stainless steel? The Marine Magnum is nickel? And is the INOX even possible because of the alloy? I have no idea about this guys. I have never blued a gun before I am just curious about the process and if it's possible to turn a stainless gun into a blued gun.

Sell stainless and buy blue, should have money leftover for ammo.

Mike.

"previously stainless" does not compute. Stainless is stainless - it's not a finish - it's the material type. Blueing is actually a controlled rusting process - something stainless is expressly designed not to do.

Disclaimer - stainless can rust if it is neglected, but not like regular steel.

KG GUNKOTE, Gun metal blue, but again why would you want to turn stainless to blued? if you are going to change colour go with something else or sell or trade them for the blued gun you want.

I would want a stainless gun that has been blued or painted then a non stainless gun.

go hunting, it rains or is just wet, every one with a blued gun has to strip and clean, stainless.... just pull the bolt and set it near the fire(unloaded of course:D)

I should have added something. If the stainless gun has been damaged somehow and no longer looks good stainless. And for some strange reason someone wanted to "cover up the ugliness" of the stainless. Is it possible?

What I am really looking for is if someone has tried it or knows of someone who has tried it. Or if someone completely knows 100% that it won't work. I already have my own assumptions.

Rem 870 Marine and the Moss 500 marine are nickel plated, not stainless.

I realize they aren't stainless steel. But I was under the impression that they are still considered stainless because of their coating. And am also wondering if the nickel can be blued.

Stainless can be painted. As Guntech mentioned..Gun Kote works very well.
I don't see why nickle wouldn't be paintable either..as long as you blast it to prep the surface.

I think this is what your looking for

You can black oxide the SS. I havn't tried it myself so I don't know how durable it is but if you try it you can let us know. :D

Depending on it you polish the metal or bead blast it will probably affect the final finish.

I was thinking of someday getting a SS 357 and blasting it and trying this myself. Would be neat to make a SS combat magnum that was nice and dark.

Stainless can be chemically blackened with excellent results.
The process is exactly the same to blueing, the salts are different however.
The blackened stainless steel is exactly as durable as blued CM.
Alloys and nickle can not be done by this method.
Cost is the same as blueing CM.
Many of the rifles on our website a chemically blackened stainless as I prefer stainless over CM for severla reasons. Check it out and see if you can tell which 1s are blackened stainless and which are not.
