Turning scope rings into iron sights?

Okay, so I was lying in bed gorging on cookies when I got an idea. I had just read about people having to drill/tap their receiver and/or barrel to use iron sights on a gun that otherwise only has an allowance for scope mounts and rings.

So I was wondering, has anyone else gotten the idea to just go full bubba and take off the scope and top ring and then drill and tap the center of their scope rings to put in an apeture/sight post? I figure if you rig up a nut on there you could screw the sight to the desired height and then tighten the nut and that may hopefully hold it in place. I suppose if you wanted a proper sight radius you'd still need to get a standard front sight, unless you jump the shark and put a front sight post in the front ring. Not sure what accuracy could be expected from sights that close together though. I figure the shape of the ring would also help protect the sight from being damaged.

Just an idea. Anyone ever try it?

This is a really bad idea. Like really bad.

You would have to install an AK front sight to get the front and rear to line up properly. Then you have a big hook on the front of your rifle, which is really bad for bush use.

Millet made a set of rings with open sights mounted on the top half of the ring, looked like adjustable pistol sights. Called it the hunt saver, don't think it sold very well.
Twenty bucks on fleabay will get a set new in package, no point in trying to cobble some together for that price.

munchin out on cookies, commin up with ideas...

pass it to the left bro

thats the first thing that came to mind when I read the OP LOL.

to the point, I can understand what you are trying to achieve I just dont think you will hit the broad side of a barn being that close together.

they make a peep sight that will attach to the scope base........a twist tie and duct tape for a front sight and your ready to shoot your first open sight long range match............

leave the thinking to the elephants bud........that's why they got them big heads...........

The Williams Sight Company used to make both a scope mount and rings that had sights on top. You could either buy the whole mount with the sights or buy a set of rings that mounted on your scope with the sights on top. These worked great for those 25 yards snap shots in dense bush where your 3x power scope was too much.
