turning surplus into hunting ammo

thank you for the input guys,

bearhunter, yes its a MN 91/30

I presume that those that decaped the x54 had no issues with primers? don't want to break my decapping rod like is did on .303 surplus
Back off the stem or remove the decapping pin and nothing will get broken.

Shine a light into the case, they are probably berdan primed and in that case you will break your decapping rod. If you want to just use the existing primer and work up a load that is fine but assume they are corrosive.

I broke down a pile of Norinco Non-Corrosive steel cased ammo to make hunting rounds for the SKS. Since the SKS beats the crap out of brass I figure just dump out and weigh the powder and then work up a load with the SST bullets to get a similar velocity as the factory FMJ and I would be in the safe range. I pulled the decapping pin portion off the RCBS dies but even just adjusting up the Lee dies would have worked. Broke down the round, resized the neck of the case to have consistant neck tension, actually flared the case slightly as the steel acts a little different than brass with the bullet base, loaded and used the crimper just to take that flare out. Done and done, steel cased 125gr SST ammo with re-used powder and no cost to me outside of the bullets.
