Turbo Sonic Case Cleaner

I bought the commercial version of Lyman’s Turbo Sonic Cleaner and it does not seem to be cleaning properly.

With the machine full of water between the minimum and maximum marks, the turbulence is 3 small pea size boils above the central circular indention.

I understand the whole surface of the water should look like it is boiling, is this correct ?

Has anybody used one to clean black powder cartridges ?

Any input on the use of Lyman’s Turbo Sonic Cleaner, for cleaning smokeless or black powder cartridges, would be appreciated.

You won't get the whole surface effect with a single US transducer unit, cavitation will be pretty much limited to where the transducer is, i.e. that central indentation you speak of.

There's a test to check if you US cleaner is working: take a small piece of aluminum foil and submerge it into the USonic tank. Don't put your fingers in, tape it to a stick or something. Holding the foil vertically, move it to different areas of the tank. Wherever you see pin-size holes forming in the foil that's where there is cleaning action.

The overall amount of liquid + payload has to be somewhat balanced to ensure effective cavitation. This can be established by trial. Also, don't ever put the parts on the bottom of the tank, they have to be suspended above the surface. Again, finding the best distance is done by trial.

Most cheap US units have cavitation effect limited to the transducer area. Still, many people managed to use them for brass cleaning with good results. There's a few excellent threads here on USonics, just do a quick search.

Personally, I found the USonic I bought to be underpowered for my needs, I was hoping to use it for cleaning pistol parts. I gifted the unit to a buddy of mine, and he's very happy with it. Mind you, he's only using it for cleaning parts of his bong. He says it is very effective at removing tar.
