Just wanted to introduce the two newest members of my family, bought last week, arrived yesterday: A two-tone in .40 S&W and a blued 9mm, very lightly used, bought for a steal. Happiness.

I never understood why people would buy similar guns, now that I'm on my second Sig I have an incomprehensible desire to buy another, truely a sickness. :)Nice guns by the way. I really like the Sigs sans rails, very slick.

Used, but barely... As you can see, there's a bit of a smudge on the slide there, but the bore looks like it's never seen a bullet.

The reason I ask is that it appears to be a recent production gun (black controls, unfinished stainless slide) and yet there is no accessory rail. Never seen one like that. Is the gun made in Germany or America?

Huh, you know, I hadn't even noticed the absence of rail... Shows the extent of my noobness. It says "Exeter NH, frame made in Germany" (no mention of Germany on the 9mm, however).

The dealer I bought'em from said he'd gotten them from the RCMP, as they were surplus to their needs. I took that info with a grain of salt since there was no way for me to substantiate it. Could this have something to do with the peculiarity of these guns? Maybe the RCMP has no need for accessories and specifically purchases non railed guns?

I highly doubt that. Maybe they sold them off specifically because they didn't have rails.

Another possibility is that the frame and slide are from different pistols. I can't recall off the top of my head – does the P226 slide have a serial number stamp?

Not that I can tell, no... Stripping both guns side by side has raised more questions, though (for me, at least).

First, the recoil spring in the .40 is about 1cm longer and significantly harder to contract than the one in the 9mm. Second, the inside of the slides are different. Is this to be expected? Is the spring tighter in the .40 because of the higher pressures created by that cartridge?

Yes the .40 cal spring should be larger for the reason you suspected. The reasons the slides are different is because the 9mm slide that you have is the old folded steel slide and the .40 is the new style one piece stainless.
I suspect that they may be CPO guns (because of the new controls old slide) and are probably Law Enforcement trade-ins but probably not from the RCMP. Enjoy they look to be in great shape and will serve you well.
