I see that you can get them cheap for the sks and mosin. easy to install and cheap. do they fall off easy? If they do is there a way to keep them on like that weld glue stuff or should a gut give it a small weld job or don't bother and jus have the mosin buck lke it has for over 10 years.

Hi Larry,

My humble 2 cents: These budget muzzle brakes should be called muzzle "breaks". Save your money. There are a few good ones but cost more. A few threads here in this section about good SKS ones (Choate makes a good one). For the Mosin, I do believe there's a shop somewhere in Canada which designed their own and seems to get good reviews. Other idea is to get the muzzle threaded for more options but that's getting a bit more involving.

I bought a Mosin break from Westrifle, and still have not put it on and tried yet......
I bought the NCSTAR twist and bolt on versions for the SKS, have not put those on either.

My mosin has a sling swivel stud drilled in and a bipod mount, i also got a pistol grip for it off ebay of all places and the rubber butpad, with that combo it tkaes the kick outa the mosin without using the break. If you are dead set, there is a guy in texas that will take your bayo and make a break out of it for 80$ or somethin, there's witt machine or westrifle, westrifle being the cheapest at 45$ and its a twist on with a allen nut for tightening down. SKS doesnt really need it , i bought them so that i could tame the recoil for my wife to enjoy shooting more...but really found we dont need them

I really like the Witt brake for the Mosin and I am really thinking about getting one. Anyone here has one and can share his experience with us ? Is it worth the money ?

If you wanna break for your SKS, my opinion is that this new product would be the best option going:

Why? Because it'll be very secure. It'll give you standard AK-47 threads for all those accessories, without needing a gunsmith to thread your barrel on a lathe at significant cost. Plus it gives you good options for a shorter barrel to use iron sights (not all of us need or want a red dot on a tough simple SKS).

You could use an AKM slant brake, which doesn't reduce recoil, but does eliminate muzzle rise in rapid. It was designed for standing full auto shooting by soldiers with AKM's.

Some people are concerned about muzzle lift largely due to the fact of a quick follow-up shot. Some guns have little lift, some are quite pronounced and the brakes are just to tame the pronounced ones. Yes, both brakes helped both guns, the Mosin the most, as the SKS had little lift, but the brake did improve it. Some don't see the need, but to each their own. Isn't it great we have the choice ? ! :)

Yah, but on a bolt action you need to cycle the bolt to make a follow up shot. To my mind that motion pretty much negates the stabilizing action of any kind of brake.

There are a ton of bolt action rifles out there with brakes and lots without. Like I said, to each their own ! We will all think differently and decide differently because as humans , that's what we do. I don't disagree with other people choices, I just form mine and move on. :)

Uhh, sure but this is the second thread that mentioned barrel lift in a month. I had never heard that described as something that could be considered a problem (as it relates to bolt actions) before & am wondering if the posters are actually referring to lift or felt recoil.

I have a twist on brake for the 91/30 from westrifle, haven't tried it yet but if it will let my hot lil wife handle the mosin and like it.... all better to me right :) i can shoot it without but the wife is a different story b/c i am twice her size :)

The FN looking brake? All the other seem to be held on with pins. I would be curious to see if she actually feels a difference in recoil with that brake on. It looks more like a flash hider than a brake.

True, good question !

That's the one, i think the only one that westrifle sells for the 91/30. I bought it before i actually got the mosin out for the first time just trying to cover the bases on reducing the recoil. I showed it to the RO at Silverdale when i was there one time and he said the same thing. " it looks more like a flash hider " so i am curious to see if it will change the felt recoil and muzzle climb. When i do try it out i will give a review. I havent been able to find any googling nor have i seen any posts of guys using them on this board.
