I picked up a 700vs 26"bbl in .308 This gun is of around ear 2000 vintage.
I'm new to precission shooting and picked up this gun on the advice of a friend and the fact the seller claimed to have not shot it at all since buying new. (the bolt had a slight brass smudge that I figure was from a factory test fire.)
I was wondering if some one could tell me the twist rate on the barrel of this unit is?
Any info that will help with the specs of this rifle and loading suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks

Larger patch on smaller jag, piece of tape on back of rod in flag fashion, when patch engages rifling piece of tape on rod, watch flag more through a rotation, piece of tape on rod, watch flag move through other rotation, piece of tape on rod. Measure distance between leading edges of tape on rod - voila, rate of twist.

I'm pretty sure most if not all the remington varmint rifles in .308 are 1-12. Check using the jag and patch method already outlined to be sure.

My 1-12 sps varmint stablelizes 175 SMK's no problem. Haven't tried anything longer than that.

Thanks guys,
I'm definitely going to use the tape method mentioned, as I'd heard both 1in10 and
1in12. I have a wide variety of projectiles to play with, (most in 168 match., Hornady, Burger, Speer, and a few I can't remember at the moment) but think the 168g match kings will probably be hard to beat so I'll save them.
Like I said I'm a bit of a newbie to precision shooting but am lookin forward to chasing the potential of my rifle.
Thanks again guys, I'm sure I'll be posting more newbie questions counting on the generosity of those in the know to pass a little wisdom on.

Mmmm, Burger bullets, but arent they fattening? :)

The Speer Spitzer BT are a good choice, BC of match bullet but no issue for use as hunting bullets (debate about function/ethics of SMK, Amax...) so once get them working...

The Vs used to have one in 12 like any other rem varmint. Regular Rem hunting rifle in any .30 cal is using one in 10. Custom (like the 40-X) is up to the customer's taste.
