Two 43 Mausers

Here's the load data for em both...Thanks Dad!
****USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK******

"This is the load I use for my Model 71 and also the 71/84. The load shoots very well in each. It can be loaded heavier, but I see no point in putting any extra strain on a firearm that is over 120 years old.

Cases: B&B
Powder: Hodgdon 4198 - 28 grains
Primer: Federal Large Rifle
Filler: Corn Meal - 23 grains (get from the grocery store)
Wad: I use a thin felt wad between the powder and the corn meal.
Bullet: 385 grain cast - .446 dia
OAL: 2.955
FPS: 1220fps
Accuracy is very good with this load. It can be loaded higher but I see no point to doing this.

I find using the corn meal to fill up the case increases the accuracy, just be careful not to compress the load. The above load will not compress.

If you use Dominion brass the case is somewhat larger than the B&B brass, so be aware of that."

That's a very light load. In my 71/84 I use 35 grs of H4198 with a 400gr bullet just to match Springfield Trapdoor loads, and the Mauser is much stronger than the Trapdoor. The Mauser has slightly more case capacity, but its bore is a bit smaller which compensates.

As for loads, a safe approach is to use the Trapdoor loads that are very easy to find.

I never use filler - I either use a fast enough Pistol powder like 2400 or Unique, or enough of something like H4198.

In all seriousness I could never figure out why we don't see full length 43 mausers with quality optics and mounts?
