An appropriate comparison - another is - hold your open palm out and let someone slam it with an axe handle.
Black powder loads certainly tame the recoil, but the black powder residue, fouls up the cylinder face pretty quickly and has to be cleaned off every few shots, or it becomes difficult to #### it.
