OK so you've decided on the two chambering choices, thanks Todd, now the rifles. I won't ask you to give up any firearms, but would require that these two choices would be the go to rifles for big game hunting. How would you set them up? IE: what action type, matched, different, scope, stock, metal, two of each..............

For my 2 choices I took 300WSM and 375 Ruger.

They are similar but different rifles, close enough that operation is similar on both.

300WSM

  • Stainless
  • Winchester Modle 70 Action
  • Smith barrel
  • Bansner stock
  • Talley rings
  • Leupold 2.5-8x36 Vari X III scope

375 Ruger
  • Ruger "Alaskan" model
  • Stainless Ruger action and barrel
  • Pillar bedded Hogue stock
  • Ruger intergral rings
  • Leupold 1.5-5x20 Vari X III
  • Iron sights

Both rifles are CRF actions, both have 3 way safeties, both have hinged floorplates, both have tuned triggers, good recoil pads and feel good to use.:)

Both stainless synthetic set ups. Stocks could be McMillan, or B&C, something along those lines. Rem. 700 actions, or full customs with PGWDTI 15 and 18 series actions. Barrels would be finished at 26 inches, stainless Gaillard, and fluted for good looks ;) If I went with 700 actions then Talley light weight mounts, if I went with PGWDTI actions then I'd have to look at what options were available for them. As for optics, I'd likely just go with a variable in the 3 or 4 - 9 or 10 range, and an objective in the 40mm range, like a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10 would be ideal. The chamberings I chose were the 6.5 wsm, and the .338 Win Mag.

Ignoring the 22LR for a moment..... My '06 and my 35 whelen are both Belgian made brownings from the early '60s. They are at present in Corlane Sporting Goods of Dawson Creek to be powder coated and new scopes. The scopes will be 2.5-8 leupolds in matte to match the flat black powder coat. I have refinished the stocks with varathane clear 66, which makes for a flat finish. The 35 is a rebarrelled '06, by Denise Sorensen of Victoria. It has a 22" Shillen micro groove barrel. They both shot 1/2" groups, every time I do my part.

No stainless or Tupperware for this kid .............. ;)

This is what I would have if only allowed two rifles...................

Both rifles would be fitted with mid-grade walnut stocks and deep blue metal work.

25-06: Browning or Winchester 1885. Straight stock. 26" octagon barrel. Swarovski PH2.5-10x42

338-06: pre-64 Model 70 action with 24" barrel. Swarovski PH1.5-6x42

..................................................................................................................................

The two closest matches to my "wish list" that I actually own since I can have more than two rifles..................... ;)

Browning 1885 in 270 Win., 28" octagon barrel, Leupold 3-9 x 40 Vari-X II

BSA Imperial, 338-06 chambered SS King barrel. (All metal is Teflon coated) B&L Elite 3000 3-9 X 40

two rifles and cartridges for all big game in this country....

near - mannlicher schoenauer 1908 (8x56)

far - brno 21H (8x57)

I own a 7mm-08 Ruger m77 and a 8x57 Rem 700 custom job with a Lilja barrel and an HS presision stock. Of course I would not recomend an 8x57 if you don't reload.
