When newer shooters are looking to improve performance they are often advised to use match ammo and "find the ammo your rifle likes". Over a decade ago that's the advice I got.

Shooters should test different lots of ammo and find the one that matched best in the particular rifle. The ammo match with the rifle was the key. What worked well in one rifle might do poorly in another.

This important idea was on the forums everywhere. It was repeated over and over, by expert and novice alike. I repeated it myself.

The idea that there's a special "match" between the rifle and certain lots of ammo is powerfully entrenched. It seems simple and effective. If you want better performance get ammo that better matches your rifle.

When you get good results -- the groups are small -- you've found the ammo your rifle likes. The lot and barrel match. They have a very good synergy. Another rilfe may not share that ammo-barrel compatibility.

But there's another way to look at things. Some shooters believe good ammo is good ammo across barrels. What's key is lot quality. Better lots are always better lots.

The chart shown below compares the two ideas. It compares the idea as it relates to the ammo itself, the barrel, how the two interact, and what this means for the shooter.

They don't seem to be mutually compatible. Perhaps something to think about.
