Two-gun solutions for taking partridge during a deer hunt

One of my favorite small game hunting spots has been known to attract a very large black bear.
Early in the hunting season I also carry a 12 gauge Deerslayer first few trips, just in case.

Later on I can feel comfortable with 22/410 or one of several sub gauges.
 
I use a 20 gauge o/u with a slug in one tube and #6 in the other. Selectable trigger. Grouse shows up it gets the 6. Deer shows up it gets the the slug. Last year i shot two grouse and and a small buck inside 10 minutes and all within 50 yards of the same spot. Depending where you hunt the discharge from a shotgun or a centrefire rifle often does not bother them too much. Few years back i shot 2 deer in 3 minutes apart at the same spot with the rifle while party hunting.

#6 is a little bigger than i would use for grouse but it works good for the odd snowshoe that shows up as well.
 
I've found the chiappa little badger in 22lr to be my perfect pack gun and solution. Light enough to either carry in hand or strapped to the back of my pack till when needed.
 
Could try using a 4570 and use 410 in it. This is what I use generally. With the 410 it must be 2 1/2” length and found that #6 shot works the best. I use a marlin and a baikal sxs this way

The Little Badger and a few .22 shorts does the trick quite nicely for any grouse or rabbits that present themselves during a deer hunt.
 
I don't mess around with birds when hunting deer, unless I am bowhunting, in which case, I carry a judo tipped arrow and will occasionally take a bird or hare. However, when hunting moose, I shoot dozens of grouse with a Benjamin HB-22 .22 cal pellet pistol that I carry in a bandolier holster... it is relatively quiet and does not require carrying additional C02 cartridges.
 
There is a fellow at Alberta gun shows who sells the “Partridge Cartridge “ . It uses a ramset blank and a caliber specific lead ball.
The set up looks like a cartridge case with a lead ball in the neck and come in several popular calibers. He also sells the lead balls.
I had one for a 300 Wby and took several Grouse with it using the bottom post/point of the duplex reticle as aim point .

He always said if you were chasing something else sooner or later you would blow a chance at your principal target. To this day I follow that advice most of the time.

Cool story.

But there’s plenty of hunters out there that can manage both. I don’t hunt for sustenance, I hunt for the memories made. And some of my best are of squatting around a fire with family and friends with ditch-chicken breasts roasting away.

Cool story. I make those memories with my kids and family pretty much every weekend, not just during deer season...
 
Take a shotgun and shoot all the birds you want. Keep a slug in your pocket in case you get distracted by a deer.
