Two Guns, One Hunt? Your opinions.

Rules aside for a moment, Canada and Australia possibly vary and ive not actually looked into it and dont feel Im breechin many major Laws if i were to do so, Ive witnessed one other Random fulla carting around two Rifles one days up in NSW, a 22 magnum and a 6.5x55 for small and big game....... i kind of joked at it for some years but find myself in a dilemma of too many guns not enough time :p or something like that.

I get to go onto private land tomorow for a Fallow deer hunt, where i plan on taking 2 or possbly 3 Does out from the property (free ranging but resident deer)
its been raining most of the afternoon so it should set a beaut morning an possibly foggy for allowing to slip through some open paddock to the bush line.

i kind of wanna take Two Guns........... likely the 375BB with irons, and the 30-06 i think for justin , case the deer dont play the Game an stand still close enough...?

i was thinking of slinging the 30-06 ,( or maybe the scoped 303 thinking of it, being compact) and toting my lever gun, mostly for bush hunting but initially i will be scooting along deer out on the paddocks so oppertunity is to knock one first up with the Scoped gun at 200m or whatever it happens to be... then spend the morning still hunting the bush with my 94...

Thats a neat idea, I never really gave much thought to carrying two rifles at once on a hunt - bringing a backup is the only thing Ive ever done. My biggest concerns would be interference while trying to make a shot - one being in the way or slowing you down while shouldering the rifle, and the extra weight if youre spending the whole day out still hunting.
If I was in the same scenario, I think Id try and take a single rifle with a low powered variable scope, say 1.5-5x or 1-4x, that had enough range for a 200 yard shot, but compact enough for tighter bush. Say a Savage 99 in 300 Sav/308 Win or a BLR in 7mm08/308/358. Maybe a compact bolt action or a Ruger No. 1 in similar calibers. A Rem 760 might be just the ticket as well.

But, please try it out and report back!
 
true, i guess id kind of drop the scoped rifle off once i got into the bush an rely on the irons , theres no real glassing or across gulley options, i just know that if i carry the irons, they will be out in the paddock first up and if i blow a stalk, that could be it for a while...

if i have the scope option i could get a guaranteed one before i go chase another in the bush, or i might get two with the scope first up..

i really wanna tote around my lever gun ha! but i kind desperate for meat an skins so to get a few in one morning is the plan!


alternative is he 303 has a 2-7.......... could just take it an use on both but it isnt a model 94 lever gun shootin casts :)
 
Carried 2 guns a couple times, unless one is a very compact folder that can fit a day pack (chiappa little badger rimfire) it is more hassle than reward usually. Since in your own words you are,"desperate for meat an skins", take the more versatile rifle. I'd leave the 06 at home since there appears to be something wrong with the bolt.;)
 
I take 2 muzzleloaders sometimes during the ML deer season in ON.

I also sometimes take a rifle for coyotes with me while turkey hunting with shotgun.
 
I often take two firearms to hunting camp, and somethings three. But I only carry one. It's just too inconvenient to carry more than one. In your case I would choose the .30-06.
In my situation, if I really need versatility in the field I carry my Krieghoff drilling - Double barrel 16 ga. over 7x57R with a .22 mag RF insert barrel. and a 3-9x Kales scope in QD claw mounts. The Germans and Austrians had the solution to this problem figured out a long time ago.

Another option might be to develop some lower velocity cast bullet loads for one of your hunting rifles. At any distance more than 25 meters, you will probably find you have to aim a fair bit over small game. On the plus side, missing a rabbit or fox with a cast load is not as much a deal as missing a deer.

didnt say i didnt expect it but i loaded the 30-06 and the 375 into the Ute last night and went to my Hut for an early start this morning as i find it easier getting out of a cold Swag than a warm bed..

i arrive and theres only a Hind and fawn out on the paddock, by the time i drove up the hill to a parking spot the doe an fawn had moved into the bush an were around 400m away... i figured i would loop around a big deep gulley and get onto them, in the thick an blackberry i spooked a Sambar, it was a spike , as i turned an looked around there was another head looking over the blackberrys at me, an another set of eyes beside her... a mature Hind sambar and yearling.. she did hang about for 2 minutes but being so early in the morning i opted not to shoot the fawn as i was after a spotted fallow skin.

shortly after that i spy a deer cutting aross the gulley ahead of me , like looking through a picket fence with rose bushes every 2ft to aid the lack of vision i couldnt get a shot but knew it wasa fallow due to its white ass, however it was a grey spike buck..

long time between drinks and it seemed every time i did something , the opposite manouver would of likely giving oppertunity for shots on deer.. example i would turn off a ridge and 50m further would be deer bedded, or i would climb a gulley and siddle out near the top- only to have spooked them in the top as i walked out.. FFS

end of the day, Nothing. kept spooking deer.

So conclusion was to come back an check this thread- i agree- it seems a little too much of a hassle with a slung rifle and toting one... two fairly full size rifles isnt a good idea...

i only toted my 30-06 for the Morning..... wishing i had a ruger 1 in my hands though.

thats hunting.... the freezer is still waiting and the hides aint tannin

Nice drilling I love it, deer is pretty nice also.
