Two newbie-ish questions about the SKS

You have probably read it, there is plenty of info out there about the dirty firing pin causing slamfires. Go to youtube and there are many good videos detailing this, and how to field strip and clean them if they are full of cosmoline. I have two Russians and a chinese, and they all function pretty much 100%. Weimajack here has hand picked new Chinese for $169, with tax and shipping about $215. They are nice. Also I just picked up a Chinese for $100, and once I cleaned it up its quite presentable, and shoots like a champ. If you come down Peterborough way You can shoot mine, no problem.

Do a search, there's been about 5 threads over the past month or so about levers "non corrosive" ammo. I fell for it and i can tell you first hand that it is indeed corrosive.
 
If you let us know where abouts or aboots you live, maybe someone can let you know when they are at the range to try one.
I live in Winchester, ON and shoot in Prescott. If you are close we can make some range time together.
Maybe you really want to try an M44?
