I'm impatiently awaiting my RPAL to arrive and in the mean time it's allowed me to stew over my pending decision on what I want to buy. I've pretty much said "that's the one" to about 4 different pistols now, so in the end I haven't really figured anything out. I'm only interested in 9mm at this point.

DelSelins has a new Beretta M9 in the exchange for $640 or so (which is the cheapest I've ever seen, although I don't know why an M9 is that price but most 92s I've seen are like $900). Being Italian I'm partial to this gun (weak I know) and I love the classic look.

A guy at work is pressuring me to get a Taurus 24/7 although he's never shot one, his motive is I think he wants to shoot it. I've heard good things about it, but for a few bucks more the market expands to several more pistols within $100. I was considering a XD9 but still I'm not sure. It seems like prices have gone up so much on these two since only like a year ago, I feel cheated.

I wanted a 9mm 1911 but $900+ for most was out of my range. The BUL M5 seemed like a good choice at $700 but Marstar isn't getting any until June at least. I'm not interested in Norinco (although I have nothing against it I have an M14, I just want something more for this purchase).

Now the final choice, and I'm not sure if it's reasonable although I'd like your opinion. An older gentleman I know has a Hi-power, about 3 years old, he bought new, and shoots maybe a couple times a year. 3 mags, holster and mag holder, very nice gun mint shape and I've shot it. I really like the single action and although not the "best" looking gun IMO, it's "classic" looking. He said he would throw in a S&W .22 revolver 6 shooter (which I also shot but I don't know the model) and a leather holster for $1000.

im really thinking about it as i was planning on getting a .22 pistol anyways. i just wasnt sure if the price was right. initially he siad $800 for the hi power but i found some place on the exchange has hi power practicals for like 7 something. his is a hi power standard with adj rear sights and wood grips. then he siad $1000 for both and the kit. i guess because i dont know the S&W model i don't know what it's worth.
 
Any S&W .22 revolver is going to make this $1K package a sweet deal if they aren't all marked up from being run over by a bulldozer. Since you say you've shot both of them if you already know they shoot well and that they are in nice shape then don't let the door hit you on the backside on the way to go close that deal.

This makes the choice real easy. Browning Hi-Power is a much better pistol than either Beretta 92FS or Springfield XD (and I'm not even talking about the Taurus). It is pretty hard to find brand new (especially in 9mm), as Browning was importing them in very limited numbers in recent years. The S&W .22 revolver, which I'm guessing is either a model 17 or 617, is also a great gun.

Assuming that the BHP is like new and the S&W is at least in good working order, it's a pretty good deal.
 
Forget the Taurus. Service and parts from my brief experience are nearly impossible to get in Canada. Son had to go to the US to get a new hammer on his Taurus revolver. Service in the US is not much beter I am told.

FN, S&W sounds like a real deal. Two other makes worth looking at are CZ and Tanfoglio. Being Italian the Tanfoglio should be of interest. I have one and service from Sean Hansen is outstanding - see Freedom Ventures ad above.

If you are happy with these two & have seen them & shot them then likely it will turn out to be a good decision.

I run a BHP MKIII in 9mm and a S&W Model 63 wheelgun in .22lr and am completely happy with them.

If I was in your shoes, I would go with the BHP and S&W. I have a BHP and S&W 63. Both are right for me. Looking for a S&W 18 if one ever comes along. Another great .22 from S&W.

That is an extremely good point. But ASSUMING you liked the Browning and S&W when you shot them then hurry up and buy them then post pictures here so we can share in the New Gun Party and Love In :D


Fit is a funny thing. To shoot well you need to hold the guns right. And when you hold the gun right, which is an oddball grip compared to just picking it up, even some awkward guns will suddenly feel like they were made just for you.
 
he thinks it's ugly ('cause it is ;) ) and only considereg it because he thinks it's a good deal....therefore he's settling. He said he wants a Beretta...and I don't blame him :)

Well, having been down the Beretta road myself a few times, I have to say "he'll eventually come around".... ;) :D

For now though, if he really wants the Beretta he should get it. [And leave the BHP/S&W wheelgun deal for someone with more refined tastes] :p
