What advantages, if any (other than dual weilding), are there to having two handguns exactly the same. I understand its handy for cowboy shooting but what about semis? ie. Two Glocks or two M&P's.

actually it's a "rule of threes" - one in use, one as back-up, and one spares- when the primary fails, you switch to the back-up and use the spares to fix the primary- when you can- then you switch back to the primary, the back-up goes back into the box, and you fix the spares

I can see if you're shooting in competitions, you want to shoot what's familiar and what's most accurate for you. Wouldn't want to start off with a 1911 and your backup is a 92FS. You can always swap parts as someone mentioned. Then there's dual wield just like COD! lol

If you shoot competitively, there is no "time out" at all during the match to fix your guns, you just grab your "backup" gun and carry on. I have been shooting competitively since 1986 and during matches (I shoot between 20-25 a year), I have had 3 shotgun break downs, 2 rifle firing pins break and 1 Colt Gov't go full auto with a warn sear. If you shoot enough eventually it will happen.

(TWO), just two,
you could have more than two in the same caliber .
i intend on havin more than two in the same caliber.just becouse I like a perticular gun in the same caliber .
for example i have a walther p-99, i fully intend on getting a Beretta 92 fs simply becouse they rock, and I had one before and regreat selling .and also like the Px4 Storm and the sig 226 wich are all 9mm.
i also have a S&W 627 N frame Model of 1989 357 Mag 5.5 inch non fluted cylender.
and just purchased a Blued 586,L frame 357 magnum 4.15" barrel just because its awesome .also plan on getting a ruger sp101 4.25 inch 357 mag .again because its awesome ...if they would ever come in .
The point im trying to make is if you like it, get it, just becouse you like it .

OP is talking about 2 Pistols, same make and caliber... I've owned a 226 Elite and a base 226, both in 9mm. I had one before the other, but acquired the Elite at a great price from a buddy who needed money. For a few months I had both until I sold the base 226 to a lucky buyer on the EE at a great price.

I don't think you'll find too many guys that have the exact same pistol, model and caliber, but I did have almost the same for a short period of time. The Elite won.

226 Enhanced Elite and base 226. Still have the Elite, both are 9mm.

I heard a podcast a while back that explained this but it would only be true in the states. Person said he CCW a glock 17 and had an identical one in his safe at home that way if he ever shot someone and had to hand over his gun as evidence he could go home get the other one slap a full mag in put it in his holster and carry on as normal. Of course in Canada they would arrest you take you to jail then go to your house and take your back up and the rest of the collection. However the principal of this story is the same for competition. You break the gun u always use so you grab an identical one with identical controls so you are already familiar wit it and carry on.

I always wanted a matched pair. Even with consecutive serial numbers. Of course I'm too poor to even own one of everything that I want, so the doubles will have to wait.
