I am new to reloading and am still in the process of figuring everything out so help would be much appreciated:

a) If I have a powder measure do I still need to use the powder scale?

b) I was attempting to make a dummy .30-06 round so I had my case unprimed, resized and uncharged. I set my seating die in the press and sat the bullet ontop of the case, pushed the case into the die and the bullet was in the case fine. The problem is that the neck of the case didn't seem to crimp at all..as I could just pull the bullet out without any effort. I tried adjusting the die numerous times and still no crimping. What might the problem be?

RePete:

a) How do I use the scale to set the measure?

b) I inherited all of this reloading equipment from a relative down in the states, so I didn't get everything that all of the components originally came with (ie. instructions with my dies). It is a C-H Die Co. 30-06 US die set if that helps at all...I will have a look in the CH website but I don't think they will have instructions.

Oh okay..so I just keep adjusting the powder measure until it gets to the proper weight on the scale and then I am good to go with just the measure for that particular load?

Okay, I will do that. Also, it looks like I was wrong about the instructions..found them on the table  . Here is what it says for Crimp Seating:

"Adjust seating die so that at the top of reloading ram stroke, a gap of 1/8" (about full turn of die body) remains between die bottom and shellholder top. By trial and error, adjust seating stem so that bullet will press into case the exact depth desired. When correct bullet seating depth is found, screw down entire seating die the same distance it was previously unscrewed. Now back bullet setaing stemm off at least 1/8" (1 1/2 turns). Bring shellholder ram to top of stroke. A "crimp of case neck will occur. HOlding ram at top position, screw down seating stem to make firm bullet contact (about 1 1/2 turns). Lock seating stem with lockring. Your crimping seater will now simultaneously "crimp" and repeat exact bullet setaing depth".

I tried numerous times but the case still doesn't seem to be getting crimped..unless it is supposed to be a very loose crimp? But I am assuming that crimping a reloaded shell should be no different than one that comes from the factory, I should not be able to pull the bullet out of the case with my hand - correct? Because that is what I am able to do :? .

Also, if you do "press-fit" seating should you be able to pull the bullet out by hand?

-Jake

Even without crimping you should not be able to pull seated bullets out of the case. After sizing the inside diameter of the neck should be smaller than the bullet so there should be an interference fit when the bullet is seated.I do not crimp any loads for rifles since it is totally unessessary unless you are loading for use in a tubular magazine.
