Two Way Radio's

correct me if i am wrong, but can you not be fined if you are transmiting higher than 2 watts? or on any channel that is not frs/gmrs/murs?

probably not, but can't say for sure. Truckers are getting their CB radios boosted up lots from since back in the old days. I had a gadget teamed with my base station that made a whole lot of watts on high and there was plenty on low, too. Memory is fading, it's been a few yrs gone by, can't remember just exactly what it was called. Still got it in a box in the basement. Might set up a CB base station one day again and put some radios in the driven vehicles. Used to use it everyday yrs ago.

I don`t know what CB radios the truckers in the states have, But ALL THE TIME I have to listen to truckers talking nonsense and I think most of them are from Arizonia, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado.

You're probably hearing "Skip" when the radio waves bounce in the upper atmosphere.. and affected by sun flares and magnetization

That amp was called a "boot", or you could also get a mic with a pre amp built into it.

haven't read the whole thread yet, but I have a question before I forget. I want to buy the snowmobile/motor cycle helmet communicators. Is there a difference in the ones sold in Canada and the USA for power and strength? Good, better best brand etc. thx.

I believe they are the same, I know a few guys that have the Scala units and they are compatable. Schubert helmets have a model where the communicator is built right into the helmet. You can talk, answer your phone and listen to music with it.

and "boots" are not illegal- provided you have a ham license- I've got a vhf 10 watter hand held in my alternate car and she wears a boot- 30 watts on low power, 50 watts on the upper- got it at radio shack when they were into ham stuff- now in my daily driver, I've got a 30 watt 2 meter vhf on the lower and 55 on the upper- the boot would be useless in that situation

really ehh.....It is soooo annoying having to listen to these guys when we are trying to talk over the CB's while running hounds for coyotes. Its on every channel too, Seems like bright sunny days it is the worst. I can hear them better and clearer than I can my buddies that are 2-3 miles away LOL

Exactly it was a turn off for me, it seemed in the later days it was this and truckers passing thru only..

from what I can remember, the skip runs in a 7 year cycle, for example, lets say it starts off clear as a bell with no skip, then it slowly builds up and up and up to a very annoying level and stays there for a certain length of time, then is slowly starts getting less and less and eventually comes back to clear as bell for a while until the cycle starts all over again. Yes, the skip is indeed very annoying to most. But, believe it or not, some guys like it because it allows them to communicate with people far far away. I certain am not one of them!

I am wondering if they can hear me, I sometimes here them talking about hunting and coyotes, They all have to be southerns going by the accents.

I'm not sure if they can when you are in the bush, prolly not. If you were out in the open, then maybe yes. I know they used to hear me loud and clear especially when I had my base station with the boot on. I could hear them asking one another if they can hear that loud dude with the Canadian ascent, ha-ha! The odd time I did talk briefly with the odd one. I would suspect they can hear someone with a good CB radio in a vehicle, just as we can hear them, but hand helds in the bush, I'd have to say not. But, give it a try, you never know. When they are talking yotes, say something along the same lines and someone just might answer you back. breaker, break channel, you dudes on skip talk'en yote hunt'en, come-on back...............

A ham radio licence is required to operate, but l don't have one. I use my radio for work, it is really convenient for radio controlled roads that l don't have the frequency for in my truck radio.

We used CB radio with 40 channels on each A B C D E F on mobile and 40 on A B C D E on portable. Still have them and on a good day they worked great for yote hunting with a K40. But like said skip was bad. We now have VHF portables and for distance use an external antenna, we are alone on our channel with no skip. Best is to go to a shop that deals in two way radios and he can set you up and save you a lot of money also.

So, presumably most of you all have your PAL/RPAL, hence why you are here on CGN. If you're hunting, you've probably taken a CORE course, or similar too so you can get your hunting license.

I read lots of "just get any radio and do whatever the **** you want" in this thread... do you hunt with your restricted and prohibs too? Heck, why did you even bother with your PAL at all?

Licensing isn't just a convenience, it is the LAW, just like having your PAL. It demonstrates you KNOW what part of the spectrum you are ALLOWED to operate in without causing harmful interference to other services.

If you can pass your PAL exam, then you should be able to take an amateur radio course and pass the multiple choice exam to get your amateur radio license as well.

UNLIKE your PAL, you amateur radio license is GOOD FOR LIFE (no renewal fees).

With your amateur radio license you are no longer limited to using cheap FRS/GMRS crap radios from <insert big box store name here>.

You want to run 250W, fill your boots. All legal with your license in the ham bands.

You want instant access to using wide coverage area repeaters scattered all over the country (including many rural and remote areas) when you are out and about? Done.

You want to be able to pack a small SHTF radio (size of a carton of smokes) with you to be able to reach someone when all else fails (and are too cheap to buy a SPOT)? Done.

There are lots of local amateur radio clubs that can help you get a license. Many run courses on a regular basis with very modest fees... most of them much less than you may have paid for your CFSC. Check out http://www.rac.ca to find a club near you. You will probably find that there are lots of other nutz that share similar interests as you in those groups too.

You know it all and just want to challenge the exam, that can be arranged too. Just find a VOLUNTEER examiner and set up a time and place to meet and write the exam.

Not getting properly licensed is just being lazy.

Cheers!
