So, before it was decided that AK were the devil and got banned, what were things like with the type 56 in 5.56?

What did they cost?

Were the barrels chrome lined?

What was the twist rate?

What kind of accuracy were people getting?

What did people do for spare parts?

Just curious about a bygone era.

i remember somebody trying to sell me a rpk 5.56- seemed to be overly big and awkward compared to the ar15- if i knew then what i know now, i should have bit- it was only 175, and UNBLOCKED- NO WHERE NEAR WHAT YOU WOULD DESCRIBE AS "ACCURATE"-but better than a mini- spares, well you were on your own , but what else is new with norinco- believe the bbl was a 1/12- would have been nice to have a psedo-machine gun- even if it was semi-only

Things Military in Calgary was selling them for $299.00, I remember looking at a 5.56 underfolder and a 90 round drum, the drums were being sold for $74.99.
Regrettfully I never bought it.
Out east Century international was selling them mail order from montreal.

No experience with the 5.56mm ones but 7.62x39 for comparison
Depended greatly on ammo, cheap plastic packs of steel cased steel cored milsurp crap was all over the place, bullets keyholed at 30yrds. Factory yankee hunting ammo gave good results as did norinco silver boxed stuff, good enough to hit the red centres of clay skeet targets on the bank at 100 yrds. quite consistently.
Parts/spares, well a thousand rounds or so didn't require any so no idea.

I had one bought new from Things Military years ago.
I have no idea about twist or chrome lining, but I seem to recall I paid about $400; not sure if that was with mags or ammo or what.

Average groups were in the 3-4" mark at 100m.
I had a bit of fun with it, maybe putting 1000 rounds through it before I sold it.

I paid $249.95 for mine.

THe only problem I have ever had is chrome peeling off inside the bolt and jaming the firing pin.

Were the barrels chrome lined too? Was the twist 1/12?

I can't believe those prices...People would be buying like five today at that cost.

Were they parts compatible with AK's in other areas?

My gun safe would look good with a 5.56 rpk in it I think...damn

Mine was a 4 inch gun, never used decent ammo in it since you weren't gonna be re-using the brass. It had the coolest ejection - sometimes it would throw a casing straight up at about mach 2, broke one of the range lights at Poco.
