Type 81 Barrel Threading?

if you are in the gvrd area , try bits and pieces but currently you have to be patient cos hes busy.
 
The first and last time i contacted bits and pieces...

- "Hello, Would you be able to thread the barrel of my Type 81 SA for 14x1mm LH ? "

The grenade launcher sleeve needs to be removed, and the muzzle OD is 14.44mm. So for a thread like M14x1mm LH to be cut, the muzzle OD needs to be turned down in either a lathe or using an annular cutter.
 
Any idea where to get the annular cutter sets for cutting down barrels in Canada?

I emailed True North Arms and they said they could thread it which I was rather shocked by because of the pressed in barrel. So ill probably send it to them

Much appreciated, I actually have two LMGs so I assume it's just as easy minus the launcher sleeve..? I'm hoping Corlane's can handle it. A muzzle brake would soak up what's left of the recoil and who knows when TI will finally get them out.

My guess is that they have a hollow spindle bore lathe. Thats why they can thread it without removing the barrel.

This guy got the cutter from a friend in the US that bought it for him from cnc warrior

I know the price very nearly gets me to the same place as just havingt a shop do the work.
But the tinkering than some people seem so averse to is exactly what atracts me to this approach provided one has access to the proper tools and instruction.

How did you cut down your grenade launcher sleeve?

I've seen some methods that use a peice of angle iron clamped to the barrel as a guide for a carbon steel hack saw.
I've been looking at this cutting jig for bicycle tubes from Park Tool.

It looks like it has a couple of very nice features:
  1. Mechanically reliable clamping of jig to any tubular work peice
  2. two different blade guides to accomodate regular and high carbon blases
  3. The jig and the retained work peice can be clamped down together in a bench vise without any worry about marring/deforming the work peice.

I just clamped my grenade launcher sleeve in the jaws of an abrasive cut off saw and chopped it. Thats all i had back then.

I just talked with CSC's gunsmith.

Bad news- they simply will not do these anymore.
The barrel and gas system is difficult to remove for processing in lathe and there just isnt a lot of meat on the barrel to work with a hand die and pilot.

I got the same answer from local gunsmith, who I quite frankly thought was full of crap until getting second opinion from CSC.

Yes. Some people have dont the 14x1 threading mod.
But that doesnt make it the best idea either.
