Type 81 Bayonet modification thread

Dilligaf, have you thought about just shortening and re-routering the original scales? Also, instead of going through the hassle and time of fabricating a jig for the router it would seem that using a chisel would make quick work of the job. You have to use one anyway to square up the corners.

Yup thats what im doing with my 2nd set :) Thought of that after for some reason.... lol...

chisel work in rosewood sucks...lol... Probably faster to use a router and jig...lol...

I just checked Rosewoods hardness scale. Yup, it's way up there. Good luck.

Awesome work man. I contemplated getting a bayo but after hearing that the barrel would stick out past the end of the handle so far i thought about just waiting and trying to modify a cheapo fixed blade knife with a long handle to have a bayo lug catch thing. I just got my rifle a few days ago so it'll still be soem time before i get a chance to really tinker eh.

Good work though, and thanks for the pics and description on what you did.

Looks wicked....wish I had the time and patience for this

Why even shorten it ? Does it not fit just as fine in original length after lock key nub is removed ? Just curious ? Or does the ring set loosed on barrel instead of GL ring ?

Trying to take the wood (Plastic ?) hand grips off without any damage, to file off the nub behind the ring. If I punch out the pins and take the screw out will the back metal portion with the catch slide off and then will the grips slide back and out? I was wondering if the front shiny pin was crushed fitted and punching it out will tear the wood.

Has anyone tried this yet?

I finally took my bayonet apart albeit I broke some of the handle off. The rear section does come off after removing the screw and punching out the pin. I tried punching out the aluminum pin from the screw side and the handle shattered into three pieces. The aluminum pin had a head on the side I was punching, maybe the other side is smooth. A bit of epoxy and the handle was back together and no more handle rattles.

What was the process you went through ?

Well to take the bayo apart I had to drill out the rivet closest to the blade, then punch out the drift pin by the screw and remove the screw.

The grips (and handle overall) have to be shortened a little bit to get the barrel ring to sit on one of the rings on the barrel sleeve/grenade launcher. You don't need to cut the metal but you will have to relocate the holes for the pins and screw. I welded over the old ones and drilled new ones to line up with the new grips I carved.

I didn't want to mess around with trying to rivet the grips so I tacked on some metal around the hole and tapped threads in it to accept screws.

The grips them selves I hand carved and stained. Then finished with hardwood floor wax.

Good idea on drilling out the Rivet, better than me trying to punch it out and breaking the bayo scale.
