I acquired a Type 81 drum mag theses days and also sourced the proper internal from a fellow gunnutz to replace the bad chinese blocking method.. After watching a video on youtube, i put a 1/8, quarter inch long rivet about 25 mm from the mag neck edge(see picture) That indeed blocked the follower but after some testing, i found out that with very little effort, the follower could pass beyong the rivet. Using a longer rivet at the location wasnt possible because would interfer with the pin holding the follower on the wheel and preventing full travel to the magazine neck.
So the other way around was to put a 1/8 half inch rivet at about 65mm from the mag neck edge(see pic) so the follower pin would inded stop at the rivet. This way, the mag is properly blocked to 5,5 cartridges, just perfect.
Original pinning location with quarter inch long rivet at 25 mm from mag neck edge..
proper location for pinning with half inch long rivet. Note the the follower pin rest securely against the rivet. Rivet should be at 65mm from mag neck edge.
Mag blocked to 5.5 rounds
