Just thought I'd post my Type 81 that was made to be more accurate to an original Chinese Type 81-1 rifle. The Tactical Imports grenade launcher was modified to be more dimensionally correct to an original Type 81 grenade launcher. The barrel was cut down from 475mm to 471mm. An unmodified Type 81 bayonet is now able to be fixed on. Also, the wood was refinished to match more closely to the Chinese Type 81 PLA and export wood color.

Definitely way better. Should have came from the factory like that

Agreed! I wish TI would have spec'd the grenade launcher attachment like this instead of the way it currently is. Maybe with enough pressure they can revise haha

nice. how did you mod the GL?

I went the "easy" way and cut the original GL front off and tig welded on a new front end I machined.

You should consider offer this service for others who want a more appropriate look.
They send you in their GL sleeve, and you work some B wing magic

That's nice mod. Can you share specifics of wood refinish?

Of course. Once all the wood is stripped (use your favourite paint stripper), give it a very light sanding. Then stain it with General Finishes “Java” gel stain. After the wood is stained, then seal it up with tru-oil.

I wish I knew how the factory does it. For these commercial rifles, they just apply shellac to the bare wood. But for the PLA issued rifles, it seems like they use some sort of paint almost. I doubt they would stain the wood, then seal it up, since that is way too time consuming of a process.
