Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

thanks for the info. AK master is making the rails for TI so it should be avail pretty soon and at approx C$115.

Thanks. Seems like a better idea to buy from TI. I wonder if the ak master mounts would work on the sigmaco rail as I believe that doesn’t require safety switch to other side. The main thing is I want a over receiver mount for magnifying a red dot and their full length rail looks like one of the only readily available options and they ship.

I'd like to know the same thing as I want to setup a red dot + magnifier as well.

Your Type 81 at its peak IMO. This was so tasteful. Then you turned it into a camouflaged cheese grater :p

That one remains…thats my wife’s, shes got way more class than me…that rifle has actually only been zeroed, maybe 20 shots….keep bugging her to shoot it, but she prefers her hunting rifle and pistols on range days….Im the larper, and every time i paint a rifle she expresses how i “ruined” it…

Technically the AK Master Mount full length will work with the Sigmaco rail. The only down side is that it'll sit about 8mm (5/8") above the dust cover and then about 50mm (2") forward of where the dust cover starts. I never shot it with the SigmaCo rail and AK MM full length mount since I only had a 3D print of the SigmaCo rail for testing.

I do know that when I had another set up with the rail sticking over the ejection port of the Type 81 it caused a lot of stove pipe jams. That's why I initially started down the road of making my own mount, I just wanted to push the rail I had farther to the rear and have it no jam all the time.

Great insight. Thank you. Sounds like the master mount rail and mount is a better option for what I’m looking for.

Glad I could be of some assistance.

For anyone else curious, hear a close shot of the mount/rail. I don’t have the rifle with me, but this is what I’ve hit on my phone at the moment.

The AK Master mount with their rail will sit closer to the top of the dust cover and not overlap the ejection port (than if you used their mount with a Sigmaco rail)? I want to run a full-length rail (was thinking MI) so I can run rds + magnifier but was worried about causing stovepipes by overlapping the ejection port. I assume the AK Master rail should work fine with Sigmaco threaded pins?

I can’t see why they wouldn’t work with the SigmaCo pins. You’d just have to verify that their pins are both M5x0.8 threads as that’s what the factory pins are. If that is the case, they should work fine.

As for running the MI mount on the AK Master Mount rail, I’m not sure how it’d sit. I have a knock off MI rail at home, but I wouldn’t be able to test it for a little while due to work.

The AK Mastermount full length sits with only about the first two lugs of the picatinny mount in front of the ejection port. It shouldn’t cause and stove pipes at all. I know I’ve seen another person on the FB group with the full length. I try and find it and post the pictures here for a reference.

So i used to have a M.I. Side mounted rail and i had several issues with stove pipes. It was not consistent, but it definitely was the only time i had a malfunction with the type 81…so back on went the kobra…yea its not the best, but it looks cool and the lore!!!

Admittedly it was very nicely made and very robust, but you can see in the photos below, one part awesome one part not so awesome.

For me it was a deal breaker, perhaps you could get a deflector or mess with extraction spring tension…

Looking at the said rail, it looks like it starts a little farther back. This helps to bring the mount away from the ejection port. These aren’t my photos, but you can see how it sits. I don’t think the person has given a range report at all, but if they do and don’t post it here, I’ll let you guys know how it goes. Worse case I’ll post one once I have the chance to test it out.

These are with the AK master mount side rail and their full length mount as well.

How far did the MI full rail hang over the ejection port for you? Do you think cutting the front of the rail back to where the front support comes up to the rail would help with the stovepiping issue?

Well, I ended up selling the mount, so i can't really measure it for you, but you can see it sat the full length of the base of the dot, my guess 1 1/2 inch in front of the ejection port ...I Did purchase a Chinese knockoff to cut up, I actually have it posted on ####### right now along with a red dot... i cut it back about 3/4 of an inch and it worked fine... could not justify hacking up my 300.00 MI mount...

i have it listed on G unpost, Search "Vortex Spark II with T81 side rail", if you wanna see it...

Thanks for sharing these pics. Where are they from? This set up looks perfect. It’s almost exactly what I am looking to do but I’d do the Zhukov stock instead. That mount looks perfect.

Anyone else get the slant brake? mine doesn’t thread up entirely flush with the sight post. I got it centred with the detent but wondering if that’s how they all fit.

These are from someone in the Facebook group (Type 81 Canada).

As for the slant break, I can’t answer that. I’ve only got the SR with the big ol’ flash hider on it and then the SE with the grenade sleeve still.

In my mind though I’d like to believe the reason for having the decent is to solve the issue of timing the break to every rifle. The defend helps by just letting you thread on as much as needed to have the slant be positioned where you’d like it to be.

I put the Gundocthor VZ58 lower handguard on mine. Clamps onto the barrel perfectly and I only had to remove a tiny part of the wood on the upper handguard to fit. The side mount is Aim Sports and it fits very well on the side rail that came with the Kobra sight from TI.

Sweet! Is that a SigmaCo Canada SR AR Buffer tube/pistol grip adapter? First I've seen in the wild if that is the case, looks cool!

It is and I'm very happy Sigmaco decided to make it. Gives me some options to turn it from meme gun to a more practical shooter when I want to.

The current state of the butchered SR

There ya go!

The SVD style stock is cool and all… but a regular pistol grip and fixed stock is what I desire. Oh well. Gave up on the T81 platform all together. I really liked the SR… but it didn’t do anything better than a well-rounded SKS (I got good with stripper clips) And damnit! It’s still doesn’t “replace” the awesome Vz58.
