Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Should be a case by case rule in my opinion. If its non profit, nor stealing value from CGN whats the issue ? In order to survive the firearms community needs to spread out, connect, share info and build a positive public appearance.

I was wondering. Many short stroke systems are overgassed for reliable operation and thus many of them have either gas venting hole(s) or other ways of dumping excessive gases. Type 81 does not have gas venting at all, just gas bleeding between piston head and gas regulator. There's also a bit of a bleeding between gas block and gas regulator cylinder, but those gases are not part of the force that pushes piston back and they are dumped through the hole in front of gas block, just under the front sight. This is a bit strange as I think excessive gas venting was present in AK, AKM and AK74 (variants with venting holes in gas tube or in gas block), short stroke VZ58 also has excessive gases venting with both holes in the bottom of gas block and because of piston moving enough to expose the gap on top.
Am I overlooking something or Type 81 doesn't have excessive gas venting at all?

I dont believe it does. Considering the distance the spent casings fly from the Type 81SA, one could say its overgassed. But at the same time, unlike most other combloc rifles its bolt carrier doesnt slam into the rear of the receiver nearly as vigorously thus making it noticably more comfortable to shoot.

I have never run my gun on setting 2 but I would say the gas volume on setting one is perhaps just a little more than needed which is perfect IMO.

A little? Notice the trajectory of the ejected cases and consider the fact that Type 81 HAS to be overgassed for two reasons: as a short stroke system and as military design capable of working reliably in wide range of temperature conditions, with variety of ammo and with various degrees of rifle action cleaningness.
Nothing wrong with overgassing, this is the way (c), however it's a bit strange not to have gas venting on the rifle accepted in 81 and among other syatems influenced by AK, that has venting. Btw contrary to popular believes holes is SKS gas tube are not for excessive gas venting.

One of the criteria for the T81 design was that it was to be more controllable in full auto firing over AK's while still maintaining same level of reliability. AK series was overgassed for reliability, but this is a negative for shootability. The T81 design reduces amount of gas to cycle action and instead has a multiple position gas regulator for when the extra gas is required to cycle action. Also the short stroke system reduced weight of moving parts further enhancing shootability. T81 might look old, but remember it was designed 30+ years after AK and 20+ years after AR :)

When I first received mine, I stripped her down for a good going over and the change the stain colour on the furniture.
Gave removing the P grip a good try...but bailed and did it in place.

Curious if anyone here has managed to completely remove the the pistol grip screw on their Type 81sa LMG ?

I looked at the screw on my rifle a while back and it looks like they used a center punch or something to peen/mushroom the end of the bolt
No way it’s comming out unless the end gets drilled to remove the mushrooming then it should be able to be unscrewed

Thats what im observing as well ! Its interesting that they did this for the LMGs but not the rifles...

Any suggestion on butt pad for folder Type 81 to increase the length of pull? I'm a big dude and rifle already scratched two of my safety glasses because my face is too close to the receiver.
