This may indeed sound like a dumb question, but I had been out of the loop for a while, as far as keeping track of what kind of cool stuff is/was available out there.

Only recently I learned, that the type 81 was/is available on the Canadian market.
The problem is, that all the vendors are unanimously "out of stock".

Does it have something to do with the OIC by any chance?
Does anyone have any inside info on how to go about getting one?
Thank you for any replies.

They are not banned, just sold out. The LMG version sold out in 12 hours. Your best bet is to wait for the LMG shipment TA is bringing in before the new year or look for a used one.

Tactical Imports are the sole importer of them. Not sure they will be getting any more standard Type 81's (fixed or folders) - best is to contact them directly.

T81 are supposedly no longer available so EE prices are double the original $999 price. The first round of T81 LMG are sold out. Another round of the LMG version is expected

TI announced both LMG (blued & phosphate finish) are coming next month.

rumour has it the t81 rifles will arrive early next year.

Tactical imports did say there would be no standard rifles for the foreseeable future (as the factory doesn't want to do small retail volume runs), but they were contacted by the factory who says there may be a large government contract which they could add their retail order to.

Yup that's right. An AK is half the cost of a T81, so most of their export sales are AK's. We were told that with there no longer being internal demand for T81 they were planning on shutting down production line to make way for more modern stuff. However we were told just a few days ago that this shutdown might be put on hold as they got a large foreign military order. Apparently while the Chinese government might be done with Type 81, there is still occasional demand from other foreign militaries that still use T81 and need new stock to either maintain or expand existing armouries. The good news is this means we could be looking at regular series production T81's in late 2021/2022 again. Not all older products were that lucky, apparently the Type 03 tooling was completely dismantled and gone forever now.

The caveat being it's not confirmed yet.
