Been to Lever Arms today and had another look at sniper (AKA type 88). Before you ask - it is private piece now not for sale. I put my name for one in 5.8 caliber and ammo. Its up to Lever's to get one for me or not. Rifle is already classified as non restricted so I figure its only matter of time before we see more of those. Never shot oe but I would put it on par with Tavor and swiss chease. I wish it was cheaper though.

I also figure if 5.8 is anyhow superior to 5.56 then its worth extra hurdle resizing bullets or fireforming brass if I have to.

I also though it would be great if there was a few more enthusiasts to to get better rates for the rifle or justify 5.8 components mamanufacture on a continent. There is a $hit load of odd-ball calibers and chamberings, why not 5.8 being one more.

Money in these countries could get you anything you want if you payed the right person the right ammount.

Problem with 5.8 is who really has any case dimensions on it? Who knows what the chamber limits are on powder and whatnot? Seems like you'd be charting into untold waters.

So my original question still stands..i mean it would be cool to have a 95 cause the mag latch is actually in the right place but is the 5.8 so much better than the 5.56??? It kinda looks like a necked down m43...

Last time I checked these rifles are also made in .223 for commercial export, so why this store would import the 5.8 is beyond me. :rolleyes:

I wonder how hard/expensive it would be to get it re chambered to .223 by a good gunsmith, and order a replacement .223 barrel?

What was the price?
And is it rifle registered as a restricted, or non restricted?

calum, Lever only brought here two rifles and both are in 223 and both were sold for 3400$ somewhere. I am the one who wants original 5.8 if they ever import those QBU-88's again. The whole thread is just a "what if" speculation.

type 97 snipers (88's) were non-restricted and that is the best part of it. Everything else sucks, well price mostly. Somehow I don't think Marstar or whoever will ever flood the market with 800$ semiautomatic modern bullpup scoped rifles. Nice scope by the way.

I seriously doubt the importers paid any great amount that would justify a $3400 price tag on a mass produced Chinese made rifle. :eek:
 
The 5.8 is chambered in a much lower pressure ( 38,000 psi range) vs the 50,000 psi of the 5.56. I would think that there will need to be some changes to the extractor, the bolt and the recoil spring. There might need some adjustment to the gas port as well. Since the 5.8 case is more tapered, the feeding will be different - some work might have to be done with the feeding path.

Why not? They already flooded the market with $400 M14s and people still cant get enough of them.

No it's not "so much better" than 5.56. It's just a little better :)

The bottom line is: it's a military round. 5.56, on the other hand, is an improved civilian round.

1. 5.8 case is more tapered, so it's more reliable in battlefield.

2. It's much easier and cheaper to manufacture. At this moment US has major problem supplying 5.56 to soldiers.

3. It's steel core, which is designed for military body armor.
