A gun is always loaded, period. Treat it that way at all times.

Also. For all you cats quoting Blackhawk Down and saying your trigger finger is your safety, try doing any action shooting sports or course work with that attitude. You won't last long.

Back on topic, the Tavor safety is about as natural feeling as you can get. And I do use it because as a non-restricted rifle I carry it places. Sometimes on relatively long hikes. Same thing (in theory) with this T97. As a non-restricted rifle it could be found in many places other than the AR-15s natural habitat of case-car-range

I'm one of those who quoted it (in a different thread, one of 12 currently going on about this darn T97) and if anyone doesn't see the sarcasm being it, well, too f'in bad for them ;)
 
My sarcasm tank is low when it comes to safety. As a community, we have enough damn problems to deal with without having the public thinking we are unsafe as well.

What I'm trying to point out is that yes, the T97 safety is awkward, but with practice you can use it fairly quickly. From the low ready, moving the rifle to your shoulder with your right hand, while flicking off your safety with your left, can be done with a reasonable amount of speed.
 
Hey Clobb, I haven't seen the mechanism up close, but do you think there's a place in there for an aftermarket part like an NEA 858 safety or an S&J 870 jumbo safety that could be installed on a T97 and would make people feel a little more high speed?

I completely and fully hear what you're saying, and more importantly, I fully agree with you.

As for the T97 - I'll never buy one so the safety could be a key lock for all I care ;)

Yes anything is possible. But one would have to be careful with it as the safety is very close to sling attachments points and is a little more likely to be inadvertently engaged on gear when shouldering or when slung.
 
Lol, the OP uses a safety. I never use the safety on any of my guns, and I own 50+. Guns with rounds chambered aren't safe, regardless of what the little switch says. Once a round is chambered, I don't point my gun at anything I'm not ok with ventilating. Period. If I don't want a hole in something the gun may point at, I clear the gun. Safe.
 
Of course i treat every gun as loaded, it's one of the most basic firearms rules. I just don't use the safety. To me it's a false sense of security.
 
Gives me something to practice at night before bed, when* these guns come in. Given my work schedule it might see more action in the gopher patch than on a 3gun COF though.

It's apparent that everyone is aware what a selector switch is besides someone that claims to be in the BC Defence Force.

:) Not yet, but I have a dozen other guns I could compete with, so it's no deal breaker. Plus, I'd compete for fun, not to feel alright about myself, so if I place 4th and have fun, I still win. Every gun has pro's and cons, no exceptions. If you are competing as a pro, you will use what the other pros do, because it works, which is fine. Chances are, the pros won't be using a $1000 rifle, which the type 97nsr is. I could point out flaws in every design, but seeing as I'm not designing any of my own, and thus have no right to armchair b!tch, I leave that to others.

Competition has nothing to do with it (although I realize it is a part of competition). These guys advocating not using a safety are a safety hazard in my opinion. A safety is not to prevent you from pointing a gun at things you don't want to shoot. It is not there to remind you not to use it, but point your gun in the air instead. Pointing a firearm in a safe direction, treating it as loaded at all times, and all other principles of firearm safety should always be observed! A safety is merely there to provide an extra layer in the event of some unfortunate mishap, like a tree branch being caught in the trigger while dogging heavy bush. These mishaps CAN happen, even though we all work as hard as possible to prevent them from happening. A safety won't save you from acting the fool with a firearm, but it may save you some grief from a mishap. If that mishap ever occured, I'd prefer if the safety perhaps prevented it, rather than me soiling myself due to a discharge. YMMV, but I don't hunt or shoot with folks who won't use a safety, nor will I hunt with those who act recklessly with their guns.
 
this issue was resolved by the type-95-1 a years ago no? i'd only assume new 95s and 97s would be of that design and not the old one. as far as i'm aware all the pictures i've seen of the ones that are supposedly coming here have the safety above the pistol grip anyhow, then again we'll have to wait and see the actual thing in person to know for sure right?
