I don't want to promise anything. Sometimes projects fail despite best laid plans. If things go like I'm hoping they will be available through a CGN dealer. If they don't go like I'm hoping I have a very expensive prototype attached to my rifle.....at least I can see the irons though;)
 
Guess I'm keeping the restrict for the range and the non-restrict for the Jeep, the 97 is fun and I kind of am getting used to the scope. The 10rnd pistol mags make it all worth while. Need more ammo though!! My new little pest control will go up country to my buddies property and help with the rodent problem.
 
Has anyone taken a look at the barrel on the Type 97? What would it take to replace it with a longer match grade one? I'm thinking of getting two. Keep one stock and mutilate the second one into a bullpup varminter. I'm just wondering if that's even a possibility? A 20" match grade bull barrel would no doubt be a lot of fun with one of these and 10 round AR mags.

Hmmm...the barrel is pinned to the receiver so it is possible. But a new front sight assembly and gas block would have to be made for the the new heavy contour barrel. Possible? Yes. Easy? Nope. (Note the pics are upside down).

I was looking into it a bit more with all of the take down pictures of the Type 97. I see your point. I guess a target crown by a good gun smith might be the best I can do. That's providing I can find someone that will do that. It would just be fun to use one of these as a varminter since we can't use the varminter/target AR (Which is complete crap by the way). 10 rounds a bullpup, it would be good fun as a varminter providing you can get the accuracy and a thick enough barrel that it doesn't overheat.

I guess I should just be happy that we're getting the Type 97 at all.

If you look at the Tavor Vs Type 97 thread in black rifles Lector posted some very impressive groups with his type 97. If they all shoot like his you could have a good 200 yrd varminter. You have to realize though that with the design of the scope being so high above the bore (5 inches or more depending on the scope and mount) that rifle cant becomes a serious issue and a bubble level is probably needed. The trigger is OK for target work but could be a LOT better....it is better than the Tavor though - by a mile from what I hear:stirthepot2:. I'm sure once the rifle gets out there in quantity we will know the true limitations of the design. The Gas block and sight issue isn't a big deal if someone sees merit in the design and there is demand. It's exactly what they have to do to replace AR barrels.

I didn't post any groups.
That little attention-whore / nutcase-b!tch posted, not me.
He took a pic of probably the best paper target in that session.
Not "all shoot like this" (but I wish they do).
That's exactly what I was trying to explain. Read my posts again.

I have shot few of them and I choose one that was moded,
mainly trigger job (by a real talent in the industry) and crown.
After some other guy optimized a round for it,
then some groups were reasonably good for a SA moded service rifle.
But it was a looong way to reach that point.

Generally speaking, it is a good gun, but not "all" shoot like that picture.
I was afraid the people got the wrong message,
and unfortunately that's exactly what happened.

I don't think anyone is going to think they are going to be tack drivers. From reading your posts and the posts of"That little attention-whore / nutcase-b!tch" I think people understood the rifle to be heavily modded. Maybe I got a little carried away with the 200 yard varminter remark, OK maybe A LOT carried away:redface:. My shorty is certainly no tack driver and the targets I posted show that.

So to reiterate:

It's not a target rifle and people should fully understand that.

Still working on it;). The CNC shop is having trouble finding a certain length tap that is needed for an improvement in the design. Not a deal breaker, but needed if I want to optimize the measurements of the mount. Designing something that is "just OK" is easy. Designing something that is "really good" is hard:redface:.

Isn't that always the case?
