Type of shotgun for clay

Maritime, I agree with you. I'm one of the old farts. Fairly new to skeet, but I shoot OK. I'm one of those guys that says nothing unless asked for those very reasons you said. I love to see a newbee come out and knock 'em dead, but when that doesn't happen, I wait 'till the game is over and MAYBE say a few things I have noticed. I can usually tell if someone WANTS to be coached a little... or not. I shoot with a great bunch of guys and when I see one of them trying to coach a little too much, I just get his attention and shake my head. (leave the poor bugger ALONE!!). I find skeet shooting is like finding a load for your target centerfire... change ONE thing at a time... and stick with it for long enough to know if it works or not. I play with guys that are constantly shooting behind, so I will stick to my comment about missing ahead of it... I think it's easier to "come back" a little rather than throw your gun at a bird that's getting away. While I'm here, I'll also say that the most common mistake I see is on a double, when the first bird is fired at, the shooter comes out of the gun to try to "find" the second one. Heck, I'm still guilty of that sometimes. It just ain't where it's supposed to be! HA. Practice, practice... it's all FUN!!... C.

Hey rayzorloo,

A lot of these guys here have great advice and everyone seems to be pointing you in the same dirrection which is to try different shotguns out when you get the chance and most of all, have fun. I am pretty new to shotguns also. I shoot trap with a single shot break action because that is all I need and IMO it patterns nicer than my other shotguns and I shoot skeet with an O/U but I have done it with semi's and pumps. If you are in southern Ontario, PM me and I will take you out to the range to try out a few different shotguns. With the advice of some of the ppl one this site, I greatly expanded my shotgun collection this year. I would ask stuff like, should I get a model 12 or an A5 and there would be a bunch of people who would always suggest that I get both... So I do and now I have pretty much the best example of each type of action.

My neighbour, 2 houses down from me was on the national team so he is quite informative. He shoots O/U because it sights better, lighter and easier to swing because the action makes the over all length of the gun shorter as compared to a different shotgun with the same length barrel but different action. If you are in the market for a pump action and want to use it for skeet and trap all the pros recomend the winchester model 12 because even though it is an old design, apparently it is the best balanced pump out there. I am not good enough for it to make a difference in my shooting but I picked one up anyways based solely on that fact alone. It also has slam fire capability which means nothing to me but apparently you could get on the triggar much faster.

If you live in the area, I have a couple of recoil actions and a few gas piston semi's, single shot break, O/U, S x S, bolt action, one lever action and a few pump actions you could try out. I should mention that they are all 12 gauges.
