Gun Enthusiasts Predict Ammo Shortage Turns to Surplus

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Gun enthusiasts say a national ammunition shortage may be coming to an end.

Ammo prices skyrocketed during an uncertain future for gun control.

It drove many to stock up.

"I just wish I was selling shelves or closets because I'm sure a lot of them have collapsed already from putting all the ammo up there," said Raymond Wallac.

But Raymond Wallac, the "R" of RM&D Enterprises, isn't into shelving. He's into guns and all the accessories and ammunition that come with them.

Business has been good. With a new administration came uncertainty about the future of gun control, driving gun owners to stock up on ammo.

"The rumors started that it was hard to find and they went out and bought all the ammunition and the rumor came true," Wallac explained.

But the fear is over, according to Michael Schoenberger, with the North Florida Gun Show, who says the shortage is on its way out.

"There could be a surplus in the near future," Schoenberger said. "Manufacturers overproducing and people are not buying the ammunition as much."

Schoenberger says between that at the economy, they're not selling as much.

Wallac's booth at the gun show is seeing the effects. At previous shows, RM&D Enterprises sold everything but the tables.

"We had to come we had a trailer, a van and the minivan and we had to send somebody back to get more stuff out of storage because everything sold," Wallac said. "We were selling more cases of ammunition than individual boxes."

But today, after the first day of the Gun Show, there are still many boxes left.

As the demand decreases, so does the price.

"380 could be in excess of $40 a box," Schoenberger said. "Now it's back to normal."

The price now - $12.50 a box.

But Wallac says it's just a matter of time before something prompts the surge again.

The North Florida Gun Show at the Morocco Shrine is open Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

I saw an ad for (Russian) Wolf primers, all sizes, $90 per case of 5k ($18/k). Other manufacturers are sill around $30/k

Prices will stay high as long as distributors feel like they can charge the high price.
Their cost may go down but that just means a possible higher profit margin.

All we will hear up here is that we are a small market and the prices will stay high.

Maybe the Us will wake up and realize that once they cant sell their surplus of ammo then maybe theyll try selling it to us , its not like we wouldnt take it .

oh wait , for our own "safety" it has to be NRcan approved ... FAIL.

As wierd as it sounds or as implausible , if canadians throughout the shooting sports in Canada finally just said enough and stopped buying ammunition at its current prices , something would obviously have to be done . but unfortunately its a very sharp catch 22 situation , no ammunition , no shooting , possible gun confiscation , refusal to import etc.

This is what Canadians firearm owners should get when buying domestic:p

So if there is soooo much profit to be made by the evil gun shops in Canada...why don't you import a ton and make your fortune? I mean why not, you seem to think that all the rich importers here at putting to the poor old shooters in Canada. We have been down this thread road 100 times. You have to pay for the export from the country your getting in from....then import it into Canada and have the ammo certified for use in the Canada...then you can sell it. Costs a whole bunch to do it and in the meantime, your 100s of thousands of dollars sits around in a sea container...waiting for approval that might take months. Lots of money tied up there. I get a little tired of people complaining as if there is some conspiracy between all the stores and business to put the man down with high ammo prices...if there is soo much money to be made in your theory...then you do it...sell it cheap....err if you can. Reality stinks but don't blame the businesses....how about the system which makes it expensive to import and certify....

It was merely a statement of what would , "would"/could happen not what does need to happen , it was meant to be half sarcastic half me putting in my own criticism ..

and quite frankly when theres more than a 3/4 markup on ammunition between us and the united states and it only seems to be going higher yet getting lower for the united states , then yeah i think there is a problem that needs to be looked at , and ammunition does not have to be re-approved each year either from what other people are saying . But if someone would gladly lay out the costs right here in this thread id be happy to listen .

Because im done listening to this "our market is too small" when daily all i hear is people pouring over for more product on a daily basis yet the united states seems to be swimming in ammunition with more to spare .

If you have it all figured out...and there is such a huge mark up as you say...then what is stopping you from becoming a millionaire? I am just saying....

The United States is another country with 10 times our population. There are economies of scale that allow lower prices in the US....and big cities in Canada for that matter for a number of goods. If your done listening too it and your convinced there is a 3/4s mark up...hey put your $ where your mouth is.

As I said, you have it figured...run with it. Don't let me stand in your way. I look forward to your ammo company selling the stuff cheap. Please let me know how it turns out.

As I thought might happen, there is now a glut of ammo and primers.
I saw it before during the primer famine in the early 90's.
I recall the guy from Ford Reloading in BC saying that he had a phone call from a police dept in Arizona looking for primers up here, becuase there were none in the USA.
A few months or so later, I got a flat (5 x 1000) of primers at the Puyallup (near Seattle) gunshow for $55. Thats $11 per 1000.

The only difference now is that we cannot export out of the US, so this glut does us no good.

You want some advice? Stop listening. People who dispense this kind of knowledge rarely know anything for certain.

6 Weeks ago an acquaintance of mine who happens to work behind the counter at WSS South Edmonton told me that they had just been informed by the distributor that they could expect 2-3 years before the primer and ammunition situation sorted itself out up here. His advice was to buy primers every chance I got, whatever brand was available. WSS southside would only allow 200 primers to be sold at a time, so he suggested I come in several times a week for primers until they ran out. The situation, he said, was grim.

Yesterday I was in the store again and they have stacked the shelves with all types of Winchester primers (my preferred brand). They have so many they have overflowed to some disused shelves down by the airguns. All limits are gone, you can buy as many as you want for $39.99/k, the same price they have been for months.

I don't think this fellow was trying to mislead me, he was repeating what he was told by a source that should have been credible. But that doesn't change the fact that someone, somewhere was talking out of his ass.

Many places in the US are still selling Win, CCI and Federal int the $25 to $30/k. So those prices are not too much out of line. The super special price of $18/k I previously posted for Wolf primers in the US is just that, a one time special, not regular stock.

But like many GREAT deals, it is in the US, not Canada......... :(

I don't think anyone can blame the retailers.

It's ridiculous that I can't buy ammo in the states - that is legal in both the US and Canada - that I am legally allowed to purchase and own - and not bring it back across the border.

The legislation has been very effective in keeping the sport expensive

On a vist to Ontario this summer I stopped in at Bass Pro Sports looking to buy primers. They wanted $70 a thousand! Made the drive north to Ellwood Epps and got them for $38.

I bought small rifle primers this week out of necessity. I could not believe the price tag: $59.99/k! We are getting hosed because retailers know we think that there is more of a shortage than there really is.

Yes, our U.S. friends get to enjoy the hobby at substantially less cost when it comes to feeding the hardware. The only thing we have at a decent cost at the moment is 7.62x39 Czech (until current cheap supply lasts) and 22lr. :(
