U.S vs Canadian scope prices

Well it is nice to see that there are people who pay attention to Companies like Leupold, Korth, Can Am, (our home grown corporate welfare case), and others. I see that there are close to 2000 views in this thread. In general cross border shopping has gone rampent, and the big guys don't care cause their brand gets sold, it is just the good old Canadian retailer who loses business. If scopes weren't stupidly subject to US nonsense, I would bet you 10 to 1 that Korth would be dropping prices instantly, because they don't have the distribution for the US, as I understand, and the cross border shopping would certainly effect there sales in a huge way. Unlike Can-Am I don't think leupold would have the clout to threaten US dealers if they sold to Canuks. I would love nothing more than to see people buy another scope brand, and watch Korth with their little leupold monopoly crumble a bit. Even in the US, where Leupold is cheaper and closer to to the price of other brands, many in the know by different brands because they feel that they can buy more and pay less. It won't be all that long before the Leupold marketing machine runs out of steam, and their sales are more in line with their value.

I guess they don't like me,,, :) That's OK I don't like them either.

Check out Vortex and Sightron. You should probably start a thread to ask about that.

no. ALL scopes

Thanks, your right the fascist have gone that extra step.

Anyway just wanted to let anyone interested know that PROPHET RIVER will do a legal scope import for a very fair price. I wont quote the price here but suffice to say that it is unbelievabley low when compared to the savings. you can shop in America for optics with out worry about the import/export process Prophet will give you a shipping address, do everything legally and then send you a bill for the GST, shipping, small fee, etc.

I am glad you have added to this Phil. Basspro are not doing us any favors either. It does not change the fact that there is a reason that more and more people shop in the US, and that is a result of overcharging Canadians. I beleive this is a distibuter issue, not the doing of the retailers. I can see that your business is good Phil, but that does not change the fact that many people buy in the US which over all affects retail in Canada, even yours. I am sure that you are aware that you are price checked.
I am sure you are right, and Korth's business is growing, but I am sure that I am right and the US purchasing is growing as well, and probably faster. I myself have purchased a scope, 2 pairs of binos, a range finder, and various hunting clothes from the US, saving myself close to $2000, and all it took was a little bit of leg work. This is only hunting related products, the money I have saved overall goes into the many many thousand$. This is not becasue I don't want to support local companies. I do support them whenever the like product is even close to the same price. The quad I ride came from the US, and I can tell you the dealer here is not happy with the price discrimination from the factory. I bought it from a dealer and landed it here for about $2000 under the dealer cost here.

One other thing that should be considered is the fact that Canadian Corporate taxes are lower here than in the US, much lower.

Uhh, corporate taxes in the US vary state to state... In utah they are zero (which is alot less than here). And corporate taxes arent that burdensome in Canada either. As of 2010, the last year I checked, it was 16.9% of the first 400k in profit, and 35% for the remainder, in BC. Can't remember what component of that is prov/federal, or if it is all federal. Anyway, it is pretty easy for larger corps to keep taxes low, for example, (I actually have no idea if these guys specifically do this or not) if wholesale sports has a corp that is responsible for retail clothing, and a separate corp for reloading equipment (again, I dont know if this particular example is legal, but be sure that this happens in alot of large corporations) they pay 16.9% tax on 800k. repeat as necessary. Corporate tax is pretty much a non issue, for the big money anyway. Now, unless you happen to have a 500k/yr tax accountant on retainer, dont try this at home, kids...

I am willing to accept the fact that most scopes cost more in Canada. My main issue is availability of newer products!!! I'm currently looking for 3 differant scopes and can't find any of them in Canada!!!!:bangHead: I've ask several retailers about ordering them and YEP we can order that!!!!! But we have no time line on when it might arrive!! Could be 2 weeks could be 6 months or 2years!!!! And this isn't just Leupold!! :sniper:

It would cost me more to go to the US to by the scopes than to buy them here, by the time I pay for fuel to get there ($250-$300). I don't live on a bored town!!! But I'm just about to the point where i will go through the process of getting the paper work and going to the States to get what I want since I can't seem to get it here in Canada!!!

Prophet River also brought in my scope for me, and I was very happy. The savings was about $450, and we are not talking about $2500 scope. I would recomend them to anyone.

I would like to disagree with your take on corporate taxes. On a federal level corporate tax here is about that 17% rate, and in the US about 35%. Corporate tax is a big issue for the big money, this is why many US corporations have moved there head office to Canada, Ireland, and other places. The tax savings are huge, but our prices here are still higher. This is starting to change, only because of public awareness.

I have heard all of the arguments for and against the fair or non fair prices in Canada. ( It costs so much more to ship here,,, Bull Crap,,, It cost so much more to do business here,,, very slightly, and mainly because of fairer wages,,, Our tax system is not business friendly,,, Bull Crap, our lower corporate taxes offset the extra in wages, etc hands down,,,, We are a smaller market,, smaller than what? Smaller than all of the US yes, bigger market than, Texas, or California, or New York. All products must be distributed to all the dealers in any of these places, so it is a matter realy of how much more does it cost to deliver a product to Calgary, or Toronto from say Oregon, than it does to send it to Florida,,, Not much if anything, and maybe less. One way or another the price of say a scope delivery difference of $10 to $20, does not justify, a price difference of $hundreds.

Give Prophet River a call.

My latest NightForce that I bought in Canada was about $30 more than the going price from the big online retailers in the U.S... that's about right to me.

Moral of the story? Buy something other than Leupold.

It does cost more to ship the same distance in Canada. We can partially thank our fuel costs for this and its also related to your second point. We are a smaller market so we don't get the same low freight rates because the volume isn't there.

As for being a smaller market I don't see how you can say we aren't. California has almost 38 million and Canada as a whole is ballpark 35 million? Geographically we aren't smaller but acres aren't consumers. There are wayyyy more people stateside.

Support dealers who you feel are offering a fair price on their product. Send a message by sending your money where you feel it is due.

Shipping costs are very minimal. Think that any corporation could at worse use Canada Post. We can ship a single scope accross the country for $20. They could more than likely ship from a central distribotor to almost anywhere in canada for an average of less than $5 per unit.

Who are you shipping with for less than 5 dollars a unit? With Canada post you're about ten dollars for regular expedited parcel if its light (a couple pounds). They are the cheapest option I know of. Purolator will be about 15 for something similar. Loomis/DHL is ok west as an option.

If you compare rates for courier companies travelling similar distances in Canada and the US you'll probably find Canada's rates about 20 percent higher, sometimes more. Thats comparing the two respective postal services, and fedex US vs Canada.
