I'm beginning to think it's time for me to get in the game, pony up and buy an AR, despite their restricted status..
Can't explain it, just want one real bad

Ive noticed their is a BIG mini 14 fan base aswell in the states! I love both my ar's! Reliable, light weight, accurate! (Norinco 20'' and a Imperial Defense 14.5") The mini 14 is also a very great system, light weight, I love my plain jane wood stock, strong and compact, accurate aswell. Mags feed just as easily as the ar's. All these guys can preform better than I can with out a doubt! I like to mix up the wood and the plastic !

To a degree.

Remember that 20 years ago, there were only a handful of AR-15 manufacturers as compared to today. It had to establish itself as a good, reliable rifle before it achieved such popularity. The fact that its popularity continues to grow is due to the good design coupled with its modular nature and ability to keep up with much newer designs.

Eugene stoner was decades ahead of everyone by using aircraft aluminium forging in both upper and lower receivers, with a KISS barrel nut system. FAL and AKs were basicly wooden rifles made in steel instead of wood - they don't actually have enclosed "upper receivers" as fundations for sighting system . The idea of upper receiver only caught on in the 70's by the Europenas. All the 5.56s developed in the 70's and 80's by Europeans were still stuck in welded stamped steel sheet construction other than the big chunk of cast alumium in AUG.

The Europeans have only started catching up with AR lately. The fact that HK finds that it pays to canabalize its own G36 market with a higher priced 416 says something about the architecture of the AR system. Stoner was at least 30 years ahead of its time. It is like if we are jumping into telescopic ammo type weapon right now, 30 years later we will see others start catching up.

AR15 type rifles are the gold standard all other black rifles are measured against. There may be some better, at a much higher cost, but not too many. I can't think of a more versatile and accurate design to date. The US Army has had numerous competitions in last couple of decades to replace the basic M16/M4 and guess what? They still haven't replaced the AR15/M16/M4 with a better firearm.
