Uberti Winchester 1873 clone - can we improve it? YES WE CAN!

Next question my carrier does not go down all the way to level and if I work the lever slowly the bolt will catch on the carrier. I'm thinking that my lift arm has straightened from the carrier getting gummed up and jamming. I think a little bend is all it will need. What do you think.

I think that the lifter arm is really robust and it's unlikely it has bent. It's possible the carrier itself is burred where the lifter arm is inserted. It's also possible it was just not well fitted from the factory.

You need to solve it though before you break the lower cartridge guide lug off the bolt. I could likely diagnose it in person, but unless you live in Ottawa, you'll need to bring it to a decent 'smith.

Actually I think the guide is broken off but it still extracts great so I'm not sure. ill post a photo for you in one week as I'm heading off to cuba tomorrow.

Hmm... if your guide was jammed so badly from the factory that the carrier broke it off, I suppose it IS possible that the lifter arms is now also bent. I have a lifter arms I could send you, but you may need a new bolt body as well from VTI gun parts, or alternately, contact Gunco in Ottawa - they are the Uberti warranty centre.

Unfortunately, most guy don't know enough about the operating mechanism of the 73 to realize they have a timing issue until it breaks, then they find out the hard way.

It is very odd though that your bolt lug would not clear the carrier but that the gun would still feed. I'm guessing it always fed pretty rough if that's the case as the case rim would have to ride forward over the lower lug to come up to chamber level. It WILL do that, but only if you cycle the gun really hard.

In a well timed 73, the lower feed lug should fully retract just as the cartridge rim reaches the lower surface of the bolt's lower feed lug. Generally this is done through fitting of the lifter arm.

Thank you!
