I would pick 9mm over .40S&W anyday. I have never liked shooting .40S&W whether it was a Glock or a steel framed S&W. My favs are .45ACP and 9mm.
Also, FWIW... I love my Norinco 1911. It is chambered in .45ACP, not 9mm, but still. It is very accurate, all forged, has a chrome lined barrel, and it's guilt free. I like it just the way it is.... and find the trigger on mine is nice, so I don't even have to get it tuned. Inexpensive Norc 1911's and M14's are some of the few gun related perks of living in Canada! lol Not to mention the exceptional warranty Marstar offers should it happen that you do have problems.
PS - Mine has not experienced a single malfunction of any kind, and all it has been fed are my mild reloads using lead SWC's.

I now have a Hi-Point .40 and I actually like the damn thing. It has a great set of ghost sights, fixed barrel for great accuracy, and because its quite big and heavy it actually fits my mitts. Super reliable. Built like a tank. Norc's are quite good too, but kinda like a 10/22 ruger, you have to sink some bucks into most to get them to their potential. I have one now, and I feel so so about it. I have shot nice Norc's before, but never owned one. My friends love shooting my Hi-Point too, but on the way home from the range, they always say they feel "dirty" for some reason. (like how you feel when you bang the school slut at a party and know you are never gonna live it down)

I own a few norks, I have never even fired a Hi-point..... Go Nork!! in 9mm!
That said (despite being ugly as hell) all accounts that I have seen/heard on the Hi-points is that they are a nice well balanced pistol, they seem to shoot well too.
So really it don't matter which one you get........ I would reccommend starting out with a 9 mil first..... You can always get the 40 next week...... They only cost a couple a hundrid buck fer gawd sakes

I am biased against Norincos for a number of reasons, the most important being that three for three, the ones I purchased were crap. Seriously - crap.
Some people have great experiences with Norinco, and apparently that must be possible due to the number of positive reports I see on this board... But I wouldn't recommend them based on my personal experience.
That said, 9mm is perfectly acceptable for a first centrefire pistol. How much energy do you need to shoot holes in paper? .40 is a waste of money... But, it's your money, so go ahead if you like.
Have you looked at the Rugers? CZs? Hell, even though I'm not a fan, Glocks are pretty inexpensive?
Try to test drive as much as possible with folks on the board here, and have fun shopping!

I agree. The CZ 75 is a great gun and even used, as we all know, if well taken care of, guns last a long time....
the other brands, with my limited experience or hearing/seeing others shoot them, are not so good....maybe the norinco is o.k...but there's this other knock of company that makes sig type or other desings that I believe are crap...I just can't remember the name of it...
I do remember some one was showing these off at a match I was at in pembroke, ont...and the gun got easily gumed up, I actually watched the slide moving and stopping half way....it just stopped...granted there were many rounds thru it that day, but I've never seen that before....all I remember is it was a knock off of some kind.....
go quality brand, even if used....!!!!
