This happened to me..

I am curious as to what you would have done with a rifle and without a rifle..

I was walking along a path to cut down a rocky shore of a river,, not a fast flowing wild river with high water, but a river none the less...that can be quite wild in the spring...

I broke out onto the river banks and was walking down the river. Behind me two Grizzly cubs come out of a different path onto the river bank and are lookin at me...about 150-200 yrds behind..

Get your rifle ready and move out of the area.

No rifle? move out of the area. You are still plenty far away.

If the wind is in the right direction, let them smell you, they will scoot out of there.

I was 19 and it was my first year living in Jasper. My only experience with the big bears was the 15 minute recruitment video they showed me.

I was doing some hiking and fishing in the Tonquin Valley.

I broke out onto a stream/River and was enjoying the hike . I looked back to take in the scenery and there were two cubs looking at me.

I had no bear spray, no bear bells, bangers,.. though I did sing alot:D

i ran like a mad man into the water and climbed up on to a rock and shouted and screamed til I was hoarse. I only saw mamma for a few seconds. She seemed liked a scolding mother and all three were on their way.

I stayed on the rock for well over 2 hours. The entire hike and camp out I saw the trail behind me as much as the trail in front of me.

After that experience I took it upon myself to secure my own sfety while enjoying the outdoors in Alberta. By my 3 rd year in Jasper, I had been all over the park. I had made friends with some great locals, guides and one fellow who had actually been attacked by a Grizzly and made it out.

By year 5 I was doing some small time guiding and such, bit of mountain climbing and had really explorerd the park.

In those and following years I saw a few big bears, ... once in a meadow, and I too was in the meadow,.. so was my girlfriend from Scarborough!:D
She was gonna pop a cap in his azz... after she finished her joint..:D

When I think back, I did so many things that were dangerous and stupid, simply out of ignorance.

I remember skydiving (not tandem) in Hinton... It was a farce and I was in the bag the night before..

Just stupid ####...

Anyhow,.. yeah, I ran, I cried and screamed and shouted... :)
