Uh oh! Made the mistake of handling a model 70 fwt compact at my lgs.

For myself I am not a fan of 20" (or less) barreled rifles. I would go with a standard featherweight as I feel they are somewhat better balanced with the 22" barrel. I really like those Winchester featherweights, though I wish they were somewhat lighter!

My FN made 7mm-08 short action. I would trade my firstborn for this rifle in Left hand.

I have decided I want one of these little gems and planned on ordering a .308 but that 7mm-08 that I had in my hands is tempting me after reading up on the caliber. I do have lots of 30 cal bullets on hand to load .308. Is there much difference in felt recoil between the two? Is brass harder to find for the 7mm-08?Thanks

I don't have a Compact yet, but I have a Featherweight in 7x57 that Winchester made last year. Scary accurate and handles like a dream! I will have a Compact one day as well, either in a 7-08 or the 308.

Brass can be formed from .308 or .243 in a jam, but it shouldn't be too hard to get your hands on proper head stamped stuff. As a bonus you can always use the Lapua brass for either the .308 or .243 and get excellent case life. Recoil should be mild, I don't know if my shoulder would notice the difference but it should be moderately less.

Epps has a Featherweight .308 right now but not a Fwt compact in any caliber. Sounds to me like you smarter Winnie Model 70 lovers beat me to them already.

So I've have to build upy owning Remmy700 in a compact platform by purchasing a compact 7mm-08 and swapping the barrel for a .308 I had laying around

Now back to the Model 70 fun, if only BACO could make me up a Super Shadow in a 308 or .260 compact. Decisions and more decisions.

Cheers all!
