Hello All,

I have been in Canada 6 months having emigrated from the UK. We're living just outside Calgary AB and working in the city.

I used to shoot handguns (a lot) in England - before the government stole, sorry, 'banned' them back in the 90's. I was an NPA Range Officer, Met Police Range Officer and coached at civilian and police clubs. I also dabbled a bit with shotguns and rifles, but mainly for fun.
Obviously I was a complete risk to society so the government took all my toys away....

However, now I CAN HAVE GUNS AGAIN!! w:h:

I have already completed the PAL/RPAL challenge and have my file number - just have to send another copy of the pass in as the first one has been misplaced. THANKS for the 'speed up your PAL' thread!

You've NO IDEA how much I'm looking forward to getting back into the shooting community again. The biggest question after 14 years of no handguns is.......

What do I buy first??? :D

Welcome, Canada will benefit by your enthusiasm about the sport!

There's a lot of cool stuff out now that wasn't in the 90s to look into, so have fun looking! There's a lot of range reports and supplier recommendations on here, so you're in the right place to see what lives up to the hype.

Welcome to CGN, and welcome to Canada!

Have a look at the Newbie FAQ Section, the link is in my sigline below.

Welcome to Canada! Glad to have ya! And... GLOCK!!! Or your d1ck will fall off as Hungry says!!!

Cheers
Jay

If you like 45, then find an HK45, not the USP version. You will be very pleased with the Gun, in every way. ergonomics, reliability, accuracy, resale etc etc. If 9mm do not over look the whole HK offereing, if you want to go straight to the top in 9mm, the new Sig Legend is it. Welcome to Alberta!

Welcome Back

If you're in the area generally north of Calgary, you might want to come by the Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club. New members are always welcome. It's an indoor range and open year round.

There are lots of great places to shoot near Calgary and quite a few nice gun stores. I would reccomend checking out Calgary shooting Center it's brand new and very nice. Just bought a Lee Enfield No4T there last week.

Welcome to Canada and the CGN's forum.

You are lucky you ended up in Alberta and not in anti-gun Ontario (where I am), or Quebec! The western provinces are much more 'gun friendly' when it comes to store selection, equipment, supplies, gun transfers, etc.

Some good suggestions have been made above on pistols to considerHowever, if you were into shooting pistols prior to England 'collecting' and destroying them, what did you shoot before? You may want to find some guns you owned and enjoyed shooting previously.

I have a mix of newer design/manufactured pistols, but I still really like some of my older pistols, a West German Sig P226 (thanks dizzy!) a P220, and my 'fun gun' an older Mark VII DE .44.

If you have the dollars, and like to shoot 9mm, I had the opportunity to shoot a Sig X5 a few weeks ago....................................an incredible gun, accurate as h*ll, the groups I shot with it even impressed me!! This is one gun I want to add to my safe.

As mentioned above by 'dizzy', the HK45 is a very nice pistol, I bought one earlier this year, very nice gun to shoot. I also own a USP .45 which is also a nice gun to shoot. As dizzy mentioned, HK offer some nice pistols, I've got my eye on a P30 and if I can find a nice one at a reasonable price, I would like to add a P7 (PSP or M8............if I can't resist, maybe both!).

You have several good gun shops/ranges in the Calgary area. I've been to TSE, I know they have an indoor range and you can rent pistols to shoot in their range, perhaps you may want to try some different guns out before you decide. I'm sure there are other clubs/ranges in the area that can offer the same.

Oh, you probably need to prepare yourself for the pending Calgary's ever changing winter month temperature 'swings'. You can be in a light jacket one day, and freezing your butt off the next day!! LOL

Welcome again.

Welcome to the great white north. Maybe some of the local forum members will take you out and you can try a couple of their guns before you buy. I’m in Calgary but spend a lot of time in Saskatchewan, PM me if you want to go out and shoot some coyotes or gophers.

Wow - thanks for the warm welcome guys!

if you were into shooting pistols prior to England 'collecting' and destroying them, what did you shoot before?

Well, without having too many emotional flash-backs.....
Pistols: Sig 226; Glock 17,20,21; Desert Eagle 357; Colt Officers 45; Colt 1911A1; Colt Gold Cup 45 semi-race gun; Colt Delta Elite; Beretta 92F; Browning Hi-Power
Wheelguns: S&W 586 6"; Colt Python 4,6,8"; S&W 29 6 1/2 and 8 3/8.
Longuns: Mossberg 500; Ruger 10/22; Remington 700 .308; Steyr SSG .308; Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon

I think that's about it, obviously not owned all at the same time! Have shot a fair bit of other stuff too.

I'm glad to hear there are several options to shoot in and around Calgary. So far all the shooters I've met have been real friendly, a part of the community I really missed. One of them even let me have a go with a S&W 500 :D

I would like something both my wife and I can shoot (she's new to shooting) and something I can get into IDPA-type stuff with too. She quite likes the 1911 platform....which means I need to start reloading again too!

So far, I've got my eye on a Sig 1911. I like the look of the S&W M&P Pro, but haven't seen one in the flesh. I've had Glocks, but the boss doesn't like 'em. I've held (ok, fondled) the Sig X6, but can't justify $3600. Yet.
Obviously, I need an AR and a 12 gauge at some point as well....

And to the banks - hurry up with my damn credit cards will ya!!
