Ultimate accuracy in .308 Winchester

I'm using VV N150 for my 185VLDs and Juggs. In my testing N150 produce a lower ES and SD on average compared to Varget. I'd like to know what Mystic is using. ;)

Like others have said 155smk palma produces one hole groups in my rifle at 100m during load testing over 6 different powder charges pushed at 2900-3000fps using Varget.

I will be competing with Varget and H4350 for my FTR ammo. Looked at the IMR Enduron but way too close to the 2017 Worlds to test it properly.

ES and SD don't mean spit when the loads go in and out of tune through ambient changes. Test now... test in the Summer... test in the sun.. test in the rain.... monitor any difference.

YMMV.....

Hi Jerry,
Have you been seeing any variance on mv's between batches using Varget? It was in very short supply over here for a while and when I could get hold of some I chrono'd my known loads and didnt like what I was seeing, 30-45 fps difference.
I changed to viht N140/540 or TR140 and the spread dissapeared.
My rifle likes Lapua Lockbase 170's at the longer distances.

Hi guys. Interesting thread, I'm just starting to amass reloading equipment for 308 and have many things to learn. I bought fed match primers, RL15 and 168 grn Amax to try out. I have Nosler brass as I was shooting Nosler custom competition as it seemed to group well, was actually a decent price and I figured I'd get good brass out of the deal. I have a Savage 10 FCP that I have pushed out to 800m but the 1000m mark seems to be elusive as at that range I can't get a consistent group to make adjustments to, most likely due to the bullet coming out of supersonic flight from what I have read. Anyways, was thinking of bumping up to a 175 or 178 Amax or Sierra TMK. But now after reading this thread I am wondering if a 155 would be better. The question I have is would a 1 in 10 be too fast for a 155?

175 SMK, 41 grains IMR4895, Lapua brass FL sized only, no neck turning, M34 primer.

Shot by an amateur hack off a bipod with a factory rifle (a very expensive factory rifle). Velocity 2560 fps. Can I do that again? Probably not lol.

I think if you do a proper OCW over a chrony and with a little analysis one can achieve a load that is tolerant to ambient changes with low ES and SD. We all like to add a little of our own black magic.;)

No problem with a 1:10 and 155's.

There is a lot of speculation in the OP's question. There are also a few factors that no one has considered in this load.

1. Does it need to mag feed? If so anything above 185gn is going to be a major compromise for seating length and powder capacity, aka speed.

2. What kind of shooting is being done? Long? Short? FT/R? Tactical Precision? Steel or Paper? A short range precision load might not be suited to ELR or Tactical shooting.

3. Cost and availability of components. IMR4064 is generally cheaper and more available than RL-15. 185 Berger's vs. 178Amax. All the speculative guessing in the world goes out the window if the shooter builds a load from Rl-15 and it becomes unobtainium for 2 years, again.

If the OP could tighten up his needs a little this thread can be a little more helpful.

All very good and valid points CanuckWR.
I'll try to lock it down a bit (at least for what I'm doing).
1. Yes, mag fed is preferred, but not 100% required. (Ruger Precision Rifle)
2. Type of shooting: F Class type, out to 600M, but may be further (1000) if I can get to the range. Most shooting is on paper, but I plan of shooting some steel out to 1000 or more (sorry, I'm not all that familiar with the exact or official names of the many shooting disciplines on the go right now).
3. Very much based on availability of components. What I have lots of right now:
BULLETS: Hornady 168BTHP, 168 Amax, 178AMax, Speer (300EA) 168BTHP(200), Berger 155 VLD(500)
POWDER: H4895(6LB), Win 748(10LB), VV N140(8LB), VV N550(1LB) IMR 4895 (2LB), CFE223 (5LB)

I'm inclined to focus on a good load for the Berger 155 gr bullets, because I've not seen much published for the Bergers. The others I have data for, but as always, your pet loads are always appreciated. No point in wasting time and money on "a dog that just ain't gonna hunt"...
