Ok, so I found my perfect wilderness carry firearm, Chiappa Rhino.

I know it is not legal in Canada to CCW or Open carry, but for the purpose of my collection this is what I am looking for.

It has to be:

  • 10 mm, 45 acp, or 40 S&W.
  • Semi automatic.
  • Light
  • Easy to conceal
  • fit small hands
  • safe to carry,
  • 4 to 4.5 inch barrel. So no full size frames.

I so far, looked at:

1911 compacts, HK USP Compact, S&W compact, glock compact.

Only ones so far, that fit the bill are, 1911 or S&W compacts when it comes to fitting small hands.

What about Kimber carry 2?

Or should I order a nigh hawk or Wilson Combat custom?

Get a CCO configuration 1911. Officer's frame, Commander slide/barrel. It's a 4.25" barrel so you avoid the ugly 'Pinocchio' barrel syndrome.

Shooter's Choice has a S&W in this configuration with a Scandium frame.

Other choice to fit small hands would be a Gen 4 Glock 23 or a .40 cal HK p2000.

Compact Glock or Smith M&P, if you're going to bet your butt on it - 1911's are great to shoot (I own a Commander length 45 and it's great) BUT I've seen 1911's choke after a few hundred rounds, when the polymer pistols just keep chugging along. The M&P in 45 has a grip that is very similar in size to the 9+40 versions. Compact versions of the M&P are not available in Canada, you would have to import one and order a Storm Lake barrel for it. Incidentally, why no 9mm?

Since you like the looks and feels of 1911's from your post be sure to check out a company that now own's Magnum Research called Khar...

My own "if they ever change the rules" gun is an HK P7 PSP. I know it's only a 9 mm but it slips easily into my pants pocket (it is there right now while I type this) and, with its squeeze cocking, it is completely safe. It cannot go off accidently.

Or, for those who are grandfathered, a S&W J-frame snubby .357 with Scandium frame.

You could take a look at a Steyr M40A-1 (not sure I have the numbering right). Very short but possibly too wide. Designed by the same guy who designed Glocks. Of the dozen or so guns I used to have, this is the only one I want back.

If it was legal, personally I would go with Ă  Glock 26

For the OP question, second option would be a nice 1911 commander size in 45acp or Glock 36.

The down side of Glock 36 is only 6 rounds.

Ultimate wilderness carry in a semi-auto platform = Glock 29 (or Glock 20)

200gr. Your own reloads. As hot as possible while still being reliable. Fun :)

Nothing else would come close (without going to a revolver).

Hot 10mm Auto = easy .357Mag territory.

You can get a glock 26 with the barrel sticking out of the front. You can get a carry permit its called ATC (Authorization to Carry) The only thing is the CFO can simply say no if they don't want you to have it because they have the choice to issuse it.

I know for the Glock 26, but they are ugly as hell with that long barrel and the only advantage of a 26 over a 17 is for CCW so I have a 17.

For the ATC even if they can issue one, I know I'll never get one :(

Can you? Let's face it, the ATC is a mythological beast whose putative existence is meant to keep us from complaining too loudly.

Don't assume that everyone is in the same boat as you or I. Some people have legitimate reasons for being granted an ATC and the OP is one of them.
He only wants our opinion on which pistol would be best suited to his needs not whether he CAN or CAN NOT get an ATC.

But thanks for reminding the rest of us that we will never get one:slap:

When I had my wilderness permit I carried my 1911 5" with a 22# recoil spring loaded with Gunnar's .45-08 cartridge. 1350fps with a 200 gr LSWC is all I thought I needed for Black Bears and in a pinch to really annoy a Grizzly.

Take Care

Bob
