ultimate deer rifle???

No.4 Lee Enfield has been my go- to for nearly 50yr and is my choice because I'm very familiar to it and confident that what I shoot at is going to go down.
The best rifle for you is the one your best with.
Everybody is different.
Save the .223's for coyote.

I don't know what the "Ultimate Canadian" deer rifle is, but I know what it is not...

It is not a suppressed rifle...
It is not a semi-auto black rifle...
It is not a Savage Axis...
It is not a 99 in .22 Hi-Power...
It is not a mil-surp...
It is not a .500 NE with Buffalo & rhino engraving...

<LOL> .... Sounds like my Faux Ti 700 in 257 Roberts with 2.5-8 IS the perfect deer rifle. :)

It's lightweight at 7lbs total. 22" bbl makes it handy. Very Accurate. Works well up close with the ability to shoot longer distance. Low recoil. Perfect for deer with out any overkill. Is a bit classic/cool given the chambering.

Downside is that factory ammo can be a problem.

Yup, I would say that is a definite candidate.

So perfect the deer come to it at the rifle range. Howa 1500 with k&s stainless barrel in 7x57. Now its sporting an S&B fixed 10x42, and a customised wildcat sythetic stock. Light, great cartridge, reliable as the come.

Nice rifle Jon ..... My only change to it would be a smaller variable scope with a lower low end for close hunting. Something like a 2-7 would be perfect.

Just sayin' :)

Ultimate Deer rifle, sounds like getting a compromise just right. The closest to "just right" or "can cope with most situations" I got in a build was with my old Mauser 1909, Lothar Walther 308 sporter barrel 20", in a carbon fibre Multipurpose stock with AICS type magazine system 5 or 10 shot mags. On top the 3-12x50 Schmidt & Bender Zenith with Flash Dot 7, precision hunter turrets on up as well as windage. Bolt was converted to be semi CRF, but also does push feed. Just about the most reliable feeding rifle I have. Many deer have been taken with her from 5m to bit over 400m. First choice rifle I give to guests. She has the original 2 stage trigger in here slightly tuned to around 2.5lb.

Rifle fitted with a 7oz front mounted can and 5 shot aics mag.

At the risk of repeating myself , I like that rifle Edi

I know that rifle had been shown a few times. I use it as an example because it just works so well. Flat forend rifle comes up straight as the hand feels the position, pistol grip has good grippy stippling as well as a Kaiser grip to avoid slip when wet. Comb is very high, up to centre bore line which helps with the scope. I treat myself to 2-3 rifle builds every year, most get sold on again however some are so good they stay.... like the Mauser.
Another deer rifle that really worked out well is more long range orientated although I have shot many close range deer offhand with her. Overall the weight is only a bit heavier due to scope and heavier suppressor. 20" Hardy carbon barrel on a rem 700 action with Triggertech trigger, carbon ultra light experimental stock only weighing 29 oz. in 6.5CM.
This rifle is in fourth season. I don't think it is the Ultimate deer rifle, for my type of shooting it is mostly perfect.

You are thinkin east coast brush, i am thinking more local. 10x is still a bit of a compromise, i would prefer an 8x, but had a surplus of S&B 10x scopes.

You could build something similar albeit with a fake can.

I have no use for a fake can thanks . I first saw this rifle quite a few years ago . It's a really accurate 308 built on a Mauser 98 , it's actually a working rifle that gets used a lot . It's built like a tank , has a great trigger and it's mounted in a weather proof synthetic stock . Actually , Edi makes them for a living . You and I have very similiar tastes in rifles , this one is a little outside the box , but an accurate 308 built on a 98 action will tick most boxes for most people , without the can of course .

It's a real travesty Canada doesn't allow us to have REAL cans!

There really is no valid reason they are prohibited. Well...like most gun stuff that is prohibited in Canada.

Very KOOL being rebarreled in 7 x 57 ! But WHY ? a ST 10 x Scope . just wondering - i'm sure you have a GREAT reason ! RJ

Remington Mountain Rifle with detachable mag in 260. Leupold 3-9. I load up 120 grain NBT. Great bullet and there are other good choices too. Light, fast, accurate, low recoil, wood and blued rifle that just feels right in your hands. I may put a duplex with illuminated dot scope on it for faster target acquisition up close. I haven't had a shot over 100 yards for a long time. But if I put a red dot on it that would happen so a 3-9 dialed down with the red dot on will work both ends of the spectrum.

257 roberts or AI, 6.5 CM or 284 Win would all work well in this platform too.

There is no ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL perfect all deer rifle.

au contraire mon frère

there is, and here it is...

IMG_1597.jpg

it actually fits everyone, 15 big game in 5 seasons (well 14 big game and a wolf which I'm counting), a Dad and 2 kids, 6 kills by the kids, 9 by the Dad, 10 yards to 420 yards, all three of us have dial ups on deer 300/355/420, deer kills have been 70-420 yards, we've got a few black bears 10-55 yards, 6.5 ft/lbs recoil energy means it still 'fits all' in terms of shootability, 6.5 Grendel, Hornady 123gr Eld-m factory ammo

3' feet of ultimate one size fits all deer rifle right there, you can keep your pack on and shorten the lop with the press of a button for still hunting, or sit down and wait leaving pack on as a back rest, 21st century options only will work for this discussion imo, if your rig can't fit everyone(recoil included) then it's not the ultimate...just might be the ultimate 'for you, or some of the people' ;)

another thing that makes this 'ultimate'...everything off the shelf, including the ammo, sub-moa, zero fat, 1700 fps comes at 500 yards, a deer dropped at 420 was 1800 fps impact, watch it all in the scope, oh and illuminated reticle for low light and bush, plus intuitive for anyone to place at crunch time, ultimate ultimate ultimate
