ultimate deer rifle???

Oh wait - looks like the straight-pull rifle is gonna make some waves in the 21'st century "latest and greatest" market. Perhaps they'll market them in 6.5 Grendel.

I put together a straight pull Grendel a few years ago. It's a bit more specialized so probably wouldn't fit the versatility requirements of an ultimate deer rifle theway blakey boys rifle does. But my rifle is accurate and I would use it on deer to about 300 yards.

Blakeyboys post (#100) just proves that there is not any ONE ultimate deer rifle. He has found what works for him. That's good. No reason to disrespect anybody else if they don't agree with his choice.
His post (#113) shows that if you don't agree with him, he will have a hissy fit and call names......
The ultimate deer rifle would depend on these factors to me:
1. Mule deer or whitetail deer? Where I live, they can be found in totally different terrain. (whitetails are much lower and in thicker terrain)
2. Do you hike all day?, Do you climb into the mountains? sit in a stand? Road hunt in a comfortable truck? Ride around on an atv all day?
I will use Blakeyboys rifle as an example. I hike to 8000 feet elevation, which takes me about 2 hours to reach the top after the road in ends. I never use a sling on my rifle as I want it at the ready at all times incase an opportunity appears. My rifle gets carried in my hands all day.
Once I reach the top, I hike all day. It is not flat at the top so I am constantly hiking thru gulleys which can be hundreds of feet deep. For me, every ounce matters.
Blakeyboys choice of rifle would be the absolute worst for me, as the balance point where my hand would be, is right at the magazine. Impossible to carry all day like that.
My specifications will not be the same as someone back east. Not one person I know that hunts the way I do would even consider carrying a pump or semi auto. We all choose bolt actions.
Here is the ultimate deer rifle for me. (I mainly hunt mule deer)
1. Bolt action
2.Crf
3. Stainless
4. Composite
5. 22" barrel, but shorter would suffice
6. Talley lightweight rings
7. Leupold 2.5x8 (1.5x5 is good also)
8. Short action
9. Cartridge capable of 400 meter shots.

Basically I have described a KIMBER Montana. Sorry Blakeyboy for not agreeing with you. I guess I am more likely to agree with Iron cat.

Lot of 20th century options here, but we’re more than a fifth deep into the 21st. If this were an exam, I’d be a+ in a sea of c’s.

But at least we’re getting some better answers as to why it’s the ultimate deer rifle. Like now we have a perfectly good ultimate deer rifle choice for a grumpy retired guy with limited to no sense of humour who may not play well with others.

man I'd love to know what actually makes you laugh, of if you can even laugh? humility? you're as stubborn to anything new as I am to anything old, we've been at this awhile, you've gone after pretty much anything 21st century, progress in general, and refuse to admit you might be that curmudgeonly grump and that anything that's come along in the 21st century isn't as good as the good ole stuff, and through all sorts of poking fun and trying to lend some humour to bring some people along for the ride you remain so serious, yup a lot of stuff works, I don't deny any of it, I appreciate a ton of the 20th century stuff, but guess what...a lot of new stuff works too, not sure why it bugs you Cat that you can now buy top level performance gear and ammo off the shelf but it sure seems to irk you, grab some humility, relax, you'd be happier in a world without progress...get that, we will always butt heads, it is what it is, you take jabs at me whenever you can, and won't hesitate to poke you right back, one of us takes this way more serious than the other though, you should work on that and try and have a little fun

I levelled up from my last rig, a beautiful blaser k95 .270 to a ruger American ranch Grendel lol, I wasn't too far from Cat running a nice single for many years, and maybe if this was an ultimate sheep rifle thread a few years back I'd be ripping y'all about my fancy single haha. Have some fun, I put my neck out, bring it on, just don't get sour lol

Good post, people describing why and more detail is nice, keep em coming. Although we've strayed from the deer to sheep thing a bit here. My last sheep I took with my ultimate deer rifle lol. 10 km back and somewhere around 8500' from recollection, put to bed evening before the opener and filled opening morning. I've since put it in a chassis as you can use a dab of loctite under the castle nut on butt stock and the whole butt stock assembly screws off and on to the same spot and still longer than 26" when broken down, stuff the whole rifle in your pack for the encased/unloaded sections, and guess what...it still rides in the kifaru gun bearer just fine even though it's only 3' long put together. Having hands free to run the binos/hiking poles means I rarely hike around rifle in hand on the mountain. I ran a blaser k95 takedown for many years when sheep was more my focus, tikka/sako before that, and missed that ability to stuff in pack, chassis lets me configure that again. The ruger was still pretty new when I went in for that ewe so hadn't grabbed the chassis yet, but it mountain hunted just fine. Chassis does make easier to slap things like flashlights on for night time peace of mind on the mountain. Hope no one ever has to deal with a bear at night but hey, the optionality to versatility in the modern gear lets you come up with all sorts of configurations that can crossover to many types of situations. It all works. And yeah, being able to watch everything in scope now with the extra 3/4-1 lb I added will gladly go up the mountain with me. There are tons of guys packing way more than 8 1/4 lbs around the mountains. Some things are easier to shoot than others, I got over my need to be 6.5-7 lbs all up and gladly carry this little bat and watch it all in the scope and send more down range effortlessly even if not needed, after first one you're committed so go for it, single shots don't really let ya do much there and one of the reasons I moved on, kids being another. Noticed all sorts of benefits I didn't think of making this transition.

Disagree away, this is a can of worms type thread, put some more thought and explanation into things, make it fun. We all can get more perspective and ideas when we all share. Even sarcastically or aggressively.

in that config pictured it's wearing a leupold fx2 6x36 with Korth having added a cds turret for me, which as it turned out gave me about .3 moa per click and gave me about 600 yards worth of dial up as bonus but I'm all about the Trijicon 3-9x40 accupoint now, awesome scopes, you can get Kenton speed dial turrets or mil-dot for elevation correction options but the glass and battery free illuminated. dot are just awesome in hunting situations even sunny days on the snow for coyote calling, very intuitive and quick

yes, imagine this thread in the USA? if AR's could enter the discussion...folding stock chassis guns are definitely becoming a big thing also, my bolt action chassis sort of mimics AR appearance and modularity to increase versatility etc. lots of argument for the AR as a very effective modern sporting rifle, sure is in the USA, poor Cat just rolled his eyes so hard they'll probably be stuck there for a week, laugh people, it's called a joke...why wouldn't that be one heck of a ultimate deer rifle? I had an interest in the troy pump action with cool folder I saw but for all sorts of reasons I'll stick with a bolt. Nice rig with some 21st century flavour applied

There are many rifle/cartridge combinations that work well and qualify as being the ultimate deer rifle depending on the individual. Something else that should be considered, what happens if you got an elk or moose draw. Do you pack two rifles or is your deer rifle capable of double duty. The ultimate deer rifle should be, I know my 284 is.

It's a Ruger Scout in .308 with a McMillan stock and a 1-6 LPVO.

The stock is fixed so won't fit everyone perfectly but my 5'4" female coworker is able to work around it although she prefers her youth stock Browning. So it's not too bad. It has a detachable magazine that will appeal to anyone who loads and unloads often like getting in and out of vehicles. And it's no hindrance when hiking or in thick bush or if you like to carry your rifle as cupping your hand around the mag makes for a great and well balanced grip point. The LPVO is 1-6x has a center red dot so perfect if using at "iron sight" distances but having the advantage of being more precise and quicker than irons. 6x will get you out to 400 and further on deer size game no problem. It's even got back up iron sights if you like that sort of thing.

A few things that might make it more of a universal deer rifle- Change the cartridge to something like 6.5 Creed. This would give a slight reduction in recoil and improved ballistics. Maybe a bit more magnification in the optics for longer shots so a similar 1-8 or 1-10 might be desired. This rifle has a 16" barrel but a 18" barrel might be a bit more desirable as it will "hang" a bit better for offhand shots.

Yup, it works great for me but I could see how a few tweaks may make it more "universal" for some folks.
