ultimate deer rifle???

350 Legend under 200yds.
8lb recoil and hits like a truck.
I've used it now for 3 seasons.
4 BIG DEER - 3 dropped dead, 1 wobbled 5 yds. All taken between 100-200yds. Incredible damage.
2 black bears.
Never moved 5 yds.
My woods has no shot longer than 200yds so this caliber is perfect.
I wouldn't use it beyond that due to drop and energy.
Under that? Perfect
My Ruger Ranch weighs 7lbs with scope.
350 Legend is stupid accurate too.

Here in Ontario, where shots are rarely over 150 metres, and usually less...

CZ 557 Lux in 243, fitted with a red dot and back-up open sights, shooting 95 to 100 grain SP.

Ruger M77 tang safety in 7x57 with a low magnification scope shooting 173 grain SP.

You don't need a Hammer of Thor on whitetail. Shot placement and a good fitting rifle are most important.

Where I hunt Mule deer, the 270 is about perfect.
For Whitetails, a 6mm Remington or 257 Roberts is
ideal.
Many good choices, depending on terrain, etc. Dave.

How bout this little 6.5 Grendel?

22" Howa cut down to 18.5", CZ 527 bottom metal conversion, slabbed fluted action/bolt (-3.0 oz), Stocky's carbon stock (18.0 oz), Talleys and a 6x36 with cds-zl, weighs 5 lbs 10.5 oz scoped, just under 37" long. She one hands like a pistola. Recoil energy with Hornady Black will be ~10.5 ft/lbs. Will grab the blind aluminum bottom kit when available and total scoped rifle will weigh 5 lb 6 oz if wanting to go extra ultralight. ;)

Winchester M70 Sporter in 30-06. 4-12x does the trick here in Manitoba. It also works great on moose and bears. 30-06 might not be a new flashy caliber but still gets the job done.

I have Howa 6.5 Grendel carbon factory mini action one untouched . Damn fine caliber and Rifle.
I use it with with 350 Legend Ruger Ranch depending on whether I'm in a stand or hoofin it.
Man is it nice to walk straight up versus bent over carrying my old 10lb 30 odds.
6.5 Grendel in the right hands does the job.
350 Legend is a beast. Its taken 4 big bucks and 2 does so far
These new calibres coming out really are something.
Just picked 6mm Arc Savage axis for my buddy to use when he comes to my Province.
Can't wait to have a go at that one.

I agree. The CZ lux configuration is an amazing off hand and fast handling gun. I have a 452lux and a 550 in 243. They just point and swing amazing.

Not that light and kinda long. But the best off hand shooting guns I’ve ever owned.

It doesn't have a magazine or a bolt, it doesn't have a synthetic stock or even a one piece stock, and it's in .303 British, a cartridge that many consider useless and obsolete.
What it does have is a great feel to carry and shoot, a repeatable scope that can be taken off and on, and it comes up in a flash and kills stuff dead with one shot.
No it is not everyone's idea of the ultimate, but it is mine and that is okay by me:dancingbanana:

Hello! - I "zoomed in" on the first picture - not sure if that started as a No. 1 or a No. 3 - but I notice 4 "dots" showing on the side of the receiver - can you tell me what that might be about? I carried a No. 1 for about 15 years - if it had those "dots", I never noticed them. I am familiar with the idea of the dowels into Lee Enfield No. 4 stocks to stabilize the action - are those actually the ends of some rods? To stabilize the falling block? Are there similar "dots" on the other side?

It's a #3, the "dots" are plugs where mounting plate for receiver sight was , in it's previous life this rifle was used for long range BP shooting, it had heavy stocks and a 30" barrel in 45/70:cool:

Thanks for the reply and explanation - obviously I was "way out in left field" for what those were for. An "uber" cool looking thing - the more that I looked at the pictures, the more features I saw! Someone put in a LOT of really high end work on that one - good on you!!! And, bonus I guess - it seems to work appropriately!!

Thanks, this rifle was discussed with input from members here and on the 24 hour campfire, but I pretty much had everything figured out. The surprising thing was that it was pretty uninaminous when it came to the design , except for the cartridge.
That was all over the map until one of the guys on the campfire said " You're a Canuck so there is only one choice- .303 British!" Which was one of my choices and a cartridge I have always liked anyway !LOL
Bill Leeper did the work, the lever design was his design as was the Brno banded front sight.
