ultimate deer rifle

Ruger m77 International in 243. Short barrel 18 inches I think, Great looking rifle with full wood, Open sights come standard and mounting a scope is easy and comes in your preferred caliber. This may not be sniper rig but it is a very handy little rifle that is a pleasure to carry all day. My buddy has one in 30-06 and I always liked it.

257 Weatherby Magnum all the way:p.

Just make sure you have an adequate supply of ammo (you might not find this caliber easily in local stores) and then you can successfully hunt anything that walks on 4 legs in Ontario.

One appropriate comment on this caliber:

"From mice to moose, the .257 Weatherby Magnum does it all."

And how can someone go wrong by using a 300 H&H case necked down to take this caliber.:D

From the original post crieria, I'd also say the Model 7 in .243. Put on a VXII in 1-4 or 2-7in Leupold QR low mounts. No crappy "see thrus", pulleeeez ! ... Will certainly work for SW Ontario deer & coyotes ... but in my lifetime, I've never seen a "gopher" there. You could then pick up a 4-12 or bigger varmint scope later and use another set of higher QR rings to switch scopes for varmint season.

For deer, the Remington 7600 ("Mennonite Machine Gun") pump is hard to beat, and although surprisingly accurate, most decent bolt guns will out-shine it for the really long stuff.

Sounds to me like you are NOT looking for an "all in one, ultimate deer rifle" at all. You are looking for something pretty specific and you have specific definined limitations.

A rifle that would serve you well is a Savage model 99 in .250 savage (250/3000)

If talking ultimate deer rifle I like to divide it into 2 categories...field gun and brush gun. I only hunt bush with all shots under 100 yards. I have used the ruger deerfield 44 mag with great success last year.

Unfortunatly I also have to put up will that silly caliber law, and it does specify caliber .275 (which doesn`t make sense as there is no such thing as a .275 caliber bullet that I aware of) so 270 wins are out. (This law only applies for hunting small game not big game.)

Anyway with the specs you`ve supplied and I was looking for a new gun, I would look at a ruger hawkeye ultralight, compact, or international(has open sights) in 243 OR a remmy 7600 or seven in 243.

I would rather go with a 25-06 or 260 rem for deer but they are harder to find at large retailers.

Here is all you need.

Ruger #1 RSI in .275 Rigby.

Yes Virginia that is right .275 Rigby!;)

Now go look that one up, and see how ridiculous the whole rule is.

Your criteria:

Must be under 260
For deer, coyotes or gophers
Easy to find ammo (assuming you don’t reload)
Under 7.5 lb

I wonder why someone would suggest 257 Weatherby Magnum, .275 Rigby…

Either .243 or 25-06 will fit your requirements well though .243 ammo are easier to find including lighter loads for gophers shootouts.

Under 7.5 lb you should look at Abolt, Xbolt and Tikka T3. They are very accurate rifles.

to buy an all-in-one do-all deer rifle....i do realize that there is no such thing, and that every difference is a comprimise of some sort, but the quest for the ultimate deer rifle is to me every bit as addicting as the quest for he ultimate rack. i am looking for help in deciding on which model would suit my needs the best without sacrificing one iota of weight, accuracy or quality of build.
my criteria is as follows: ammo must be readily available at walmart, canadian tire or the local hardware store, must be under .260 bore diameter for the area i plan to use it in(possible i may use it for small game such as coyotes or gophers) , it must not exceed 22" barrel (iron sights are a plus), weight must not exceed 7.5lbs, shorter length of pull preferred, hunting in areas where probable shots are under 100 yds-200yds, so i am not really into high powered scopes(maybe if i do groundhogs a few times i'll get one but i don't feel i need it for deer). i am a fan of the steyr scout and own one in .308, so i was thinking of a ruger frontier in .243 with the same scope...then i went to the sportsman's show in toronto and handled a remington 7615 tactical with an eotech, pondered that for awhile but don't feel .223 is right for deer at 200 yards and also was discouraged by reviews of it's accuracy, but then i got a whiff of a browning bar synthetic in .243 with open sights, nice ones... ones that are etched into my brain... please help me:bangHead::ar15::dancingbanana::50cal:

What you're looking for sounds like my Remington 600 in .308 Winchester with the 18.5 inch barrel.

Given your criteria I would choose a T/C Encore in .243 Win.

Very accurate, light, quick handling and very high on the cool factor. If you ever want/need to hunt elsewhere for bigger game just get a anther barrel in 300 Win Mag.
