ultimate deer rifle

:D
I have one of the old Remington Model 7's in .308 Win. with the 18.5" barrel & Schnabel fore end stock.

I replaced the stock trigger with a Timney & set it at 2 pounds.

2-7x Leupold scope.

Very light.........quick pointer.

Went with .308 Win. over 7mm-08 because of ammo availability.

Every Ma & Pa general store in Bugtussel, Northern Ontario, NWT., Yukon, etc. has a box of .308 Win. kicking around................not so with 7mm-08.

here is a websight to savage arms its the stevens 200 long and short action
they come in 25-06 or 243
which are both very good deer guns and thats all you need
there is no need for a .30 cal rifle for deer unless your a bad shot
personly i would go for the 243 they are easy to get and fair in price if it was not for the easy to get part in the ammo area i would say 257roberts but that can be hard to find at times and costs a bit more then 243 the iron sights part i dont know what to say i dont do the ironsights thing im in to long shots and i have a hard time with my eyes and targes out past 200m the stevens 200 is inexpensive it comes in youth and i can make 1 hole groupes at 200m all day long with it so it is very accurate and at the price you can beet it around and not have to worry about how it looks because it did not cost you an arm and a leg and the money you saved on the rifle you cna put it to a nice low powered scope like a 4power or a multy power that goes down to 2.5 power

I had the same sort of criteria in mind and went with a browning x-bolt in 243. Deadly, nice light rifle to pack all day, great for deer and yotes. Mine loves the 95 grain ballistic tips, but shoots everything pretty good. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Very solid choice. The X-bolt is a very good shooter.

For the love of god man, Punctuation! I have no idea what you just wrote

Just got a ruger compact in 7mm-08 (308 would have been good too if I could have found one). Put on a limbsaver pad for a bit extra length ( recoil already mild, but may not be when my 70s roll around), have a Timney to put in when I have time, and am awaiting a 1x4 30mm Trijicon accupoint and rings to arrive once the stars, moon, import/export paperwork and Trijicon's manufacturing schedule are all in phase. Should be a reasonable attempt at the ultimate deer rig in my view when it's done.

I just put a Choate stock on my old 65x55 swede, its filled my tag many many times.I have an old 4x Leupold on it that has never let me down.Well over 30 blacktails never took more than a few steps -maybe 30 yards at the farthest. Not bad for regular factory 139 gr ammunition and a 100 year old cartridge.

my criteria is as follows: ammo must be readily available at walmart, canadian tire or the local hardware store, must be under .260 bore diameter for the area i plan to use it in(possible i may use it for small game such as coyotes or gophers)

A lot of very usefull suggestions on different calibers, but I believe that he has a caliber restriction as mentioned above (max .260 or 6.6mm).

Or the BAR, either way, its a good choice. mind you a 750 in 308...;)

:D
Just dumped a Remington Model 7400 in .308 Win. a few months ago that I had chopped to a 19" barrel & reworked the trigger group so that the break was light & crisp.

I didn't use the gun much because I like a bolt for hunting but didn't intend to sell it.

A good friend of mine fell in love with it and finally his constant whining like a dog around a ##### in heat and a roll of $50's & $20's convinced me to let it go.

That gun was well "blooded" & had taken down a moose & several deer.

Do the new 750's have anything the 742's & 7400's didn't have???

if you really need to go less than .270 then do go with a the .260 or 6.5x55 or swede. a browning x bolt, T3 or model 7 would fit the bill in weight and all other requirements whatever fits you best. I would shoot 280 or 7mm-08 myself.

if I REALLY had my druthers for a deer rifle I think I'd go for one of those nice ruger compacts ,laminated stock in .260,but my 6.5x55 swede is tough to beat for value and doesn't take second place to any rifle on the rack

I know it exceeds your specified caliber, but I love my .308 Steyr Scout. It's super light weight, magazine fed, you can mount the scope in the traditional or scout position.

It shoots 1 MOA all day. Put a ching sling on and it's very fast to get on target, accurate and very tought to beat IMO.

It's an odd "Star Warsy" looking beast but you can't argue with 1 MOA in a ultra light hunter.

My Remington Model 7400 wouldn't do better than 2 1/2 " groups @ 100 yds. with anything.

My Remington Model 7 will give me 1 1/2 " with most factory loads.......that's OK for moose & deer hunting from ground blinds & off of tree stands.
