Within reason, i have my little Sako action with potentially a end of its life factory .222 rem barrel which i intend of putting a good few hundred through this winter- has got me thinkin and wonderin where i am at in terms of Rechambering the current barrel OR what is possible to re barrel using the same bolt face with very minimal modifications at best?

im open from .17 to .22 and dont particularly want a over bore elusive wildcat but something reasonable, for foxes at spotlighting distances out to 300m ?
dies must be available and brass formed from something available.

Never heard of a Myra until now.

Would a .223 reamer clean up a .222 chamber?

How's the bore looking on the .222? I think you would need a hell of a lot of rounds to shoot one out.
 
I’m of the unpopular opinion that 204 ruger is not a great round for coyotes after owning 2 of them. Seemed like they were much less effective than my 22-250 and I only shot it with 39gr.

HOWEVER, with the lighter bullets like 32gr @4200 and 24gr NTX @4400 (published superformance #s) I would say it’s a fox hammer!

Foxes are much smaller than coyotes and the .204 just might be the ticket .
Cost analysis for components against the .223 may provide the answer for WL.

Use the 222 as is for a year, it will work well. A fox will not know the difference. You can change it latter if you think it lacks killing power. I’ve shot coyotes at your ranges with a triple deuce. That said my coyote gun is a 243.
 
There isnt any price on Fur, so no real intent on keeping fur or hides with tiny holes :)

our friend has a 17 Rem, its a rem 700...... he shot professionally years ago,...... tween you an i , i may be able to snavel that one out of his hands in a few yrs!

the ol Duece is kinda cool though

Rob thats a true story an where it may fall here- even from sourcing some info today... nothin is as easy or simple in aU as the .222 or the .223 at the moment......... most projectiles are cheap in 55gr .224 ............ more so thn say 40gr .224 of the same flavours

I spoke to someone who reamed one out to .223. He said it left a slight step in the chamber. I wonder if a 5.56 Nato reamer might work better?
 
I'm for keepin' the 222 fer sure. In the meantime ye could set aside some coin to get a fresh barrel in 222 with a 1 in 9" twist to handle 70-80+ grainers for
double duty use on deer sized critters.

Once the 222 barrel is gone past it's best I'd re-barrel to 223 1/8 or 1/9. My favourites for fox are 69gr Nos Custom match in the 223. Dropped two fox this evening with the 69. Reason for 69gr is that they punch through better if the fox is running away from the shooter and better at longer shots. Downside is the drop, meaning a 50gr load for under the lamp might be useful. I shoot most of my foxes at dusk or early afternoon on a sunny day. Look for sunny wind sheltered spots, catch them sleeping.

If you don’t care about fox pelts go for a new .223 Remington barrel.
If you have lots of .222 brass and reloading dies and still don’t care about pelts get another .222 barrel.
If you want to start saving pelts then get a .17 Fireball.
 
I'd go with a new .222; if the rifling is ok, but chamber is worn out, ream for .223. Either is great. If you are keeping pelts; fmj ammo.
